John Paine Smith was born in 1793 in Chester, Hampden, Massachusetts. He
was an early settler of Burton, Geauga Co. Ohio. He married his first wife, Maria
Ferris on 23 Dec 1817 in Newbury, Ohio. To this union was born ten
children; Emily, Amelia, Lucius, Lawrence,
Martha Amelia, Gilbert, Annette, William Wallace, George Washington, and
Wellington.
Following the death of Maria in 1838, John Paine Smith married four more
times to Almira Luther, Patty Goodell, Ann Covert, and Ruth Manly Ragan. He
had three children with Patty Goodell; Sylvia, Lucia, and Jonas, and one child
with Ann Covert; Bernardo.
