Days of Knights Frequently-Asked Questions (FAQ)
This compilation will be presented in the order that the subject appears in the rules set. All items have been taken from the Chipco mailing list, and include only questions pertaining to the rules as written. All optional or house rules will be compiled in a separate list.
Section 1 1.9. May bows attach to any unit, including other bows, crossbows, longbows, or cavalry units?
YES
1.9 Is there a limit to the number of characters that may attach to a unit? NO Do they all add
their bonuses toward rallying? YES
1.10 Regarding the rule for terrain supporting the end unit of a group, is that meant to be
partially on/partially in, or partially on or in? This question is intended to determine if an end unit
that happens to be completely, say, in the woods for example, gets the +1 bonus. THE INTENT
IS THAT THE END UNIT BE PARTIALLY ON OR PARTIALLY IN THE TERRAIN. A
UNIT WITH ITS ENTIRE BASE LOCATED IN THE WOODS OR ON A HILL IS NOT
ELIGIBLE FOR THIS BONUS.
1.12.1 Do longbows receive support from infantry units as well as give it? YES
1.14.1.3 An allied lord is killed along with one of his units. That unit was adjacent to and in
contact with a battle containing a king or marshal. The killed unit was also in contact with the
rest of the allied lord's command. Are the remaining units removed from play, even though before
the combat result they were in contact with a marshal's battle? YES
1.14.1.5 Captains who lead a free company may maneuver their command in exactly the same
manner as an allied lord leads his group, and are not restricted to the leading of only one unit like
other captains. Any captain, which includes both the free ones and additional purchased ones,
may lead a free company.
1.14.3 May characters leave a unit in combat, even if the unit is demoralized or double
demoralized? YES. Note: This assumes an avenue of escape, as a character surrounded on all
four sides would be forced to make a character results roll when leaving the surrounded unit
1.14.3 When units are removed as a result of failing their rally rolls during break tests, what
happens to captured enemy characters? DO A CHARACTER RESULTS ROLL. THEY
EITHER REMAIN CAPTURED, ESCAPE, OR ARE KILLED.
1.16.1 Does the desire to use the +1 or -1 die roll adjustment for an omen or portent have to be
announced before the affected die roll is made? YES
1.16.4 How are beginning army totals determined for victory point purposes if any marshals roll
a one during their reliability check? THIS IS NOT DEFINED. AN OPTION IS TO TREAT
THE TREACHEROUS CONTINGENT AS ITS OWN ARMY. TAKE FOR EXAMPLE TWO
OPPOSING 750 ECU ARMIES. ONE SIDE, WHEN USING THE RELIABILIRY RULES,
DETERMINES THAT A 200 ECU BATTLE IS SWITCHING SIDES. THE UNAFFECTED
ARMY STILL BASES ITS MORALE ROLLS ON ITS OWN LOSSES WITH REGARD TO A
750 ECU STARTING POINT. THE ARMY SUFFERING THE TREACHERY WOULD NOW
HAVE A 550 ECU ARMY, AND WOULD BASE ALL MORALE CHECKS ON THIS NEW
SIZE. THE TREACHEROUS CONTINGENT WOULD NOW BE ITS OWN 200 ECU
FORCE UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE OPPOSING PLAYER, AND WOULD MAKE
MORALE ROLLS BASED ONLY ON ITS OWN LOSSES.
1.16.4 How is the winner of the first melee determined if a marshal rolls a 2 or 3 for his
reliability check? THE WINNER WOULD BE THE FIRST SIDE TO CAUSE A UNIT TO BE
DESTROYED AS A RESULT OF MELEE.
1.16.4 May the king execute a treacherous leader who has rolled a 1 and switched sides? NO, HE IS NOW A DECLARED ENEMY, AND MUST BE DEFEATED IN COMBAT.
Section 2
Section 4 4.2 A legal target has the edge farthest from the shooting unit in the arc of fire, which might not
necessarily be the rear edge.
4.2 The fourth modifier mentioned at the top of page 6, which is not listed, is the bowmaster's +1.
Note: It is possible that a unit facing away from missile troops could be double-demoralized due
to bowfire, and forced to recoil TOWARDS the firing unit. Chipco states that while it may be
counterintuitive, the rules are left as is to be as clear as possible. This does not preclude players
from using their own common sense to resolve the situation to their mutual satisfaction.
4.2 Supporting units whose own front edge is unengaged may fire missile weapons and be
targeted by enemy missile troops.
4.3.5 The -2 modifier to the bowfire roll for cover from pavisiers applies regardless of the target
unit's facing.
4.6.0 A free turn to face is allowed for leaderless units who happen to be in side/rear edge to
side/rear edge contact with an enemy unit. Must they start the movement phase in this side to
side contact, or can they move there in the movement phase and subsequently turn in the same
movement phase? THEY SHOULD BEGIN THE MOVEMENT PHASE IN SIDE/REAR TO
SIDE/REAR CONTACT. THIS FREE TURN IS ONLY ALLOWED FOR UNITS WHO
START THE MOVEMENT PHASE WITH THEIR FRONT EDGE UNENGAGED, BUT
THEIR SIDE OR REAR IS IN BASE TO BASE CONTACT WITH AN ENEMY'S SIDE OR
REAR.
Individual units may wheel rather than change face if so desired.
4.4.1 A group moving into contact is centered on its target by no more than one base width. In
other words the entire group is not centered on the opposing group. The wording can be a little
misleading, as it implies that if four units hit four enemy units, and only one unit at each line's
opposite end was in contact, then you'd slide the entire attacking group 3 base widths so that all
four were touching. This is not correct, and a shift of no more than one base width would be all
that's allowed. Chipco has further clarified that in no case will defending units be moved to
conform to attacking units, which can seem unusual to those used to DBA/DBM conventions.
4.4.0 A character only affects the unit he starts the phase with for purposes movement. If the
king, he only affects the unit he ends up with for purposes of combat. A character may move with
a unit, group or battle to the completion of their move, and if he has any movement left, he may
then move to a new unit if desired.
4.4.1 Can hills be gentle, allowing normal movement with no difficult terrain penalties, but still
blocking line of sight and giving a +1 cf bonus to higher units? YES
4.4.1 A mounted unit charges a foot unit. The foot unit has the rear half of its base in the woods.
What kind of terrain, clear or difficult, is used in the combat? IF ANY PART OF A UNIT'S
BASE IS IN TERRAIN, THE UNIT IS IN THAT TERRAIN. THE MELEE IS CONSIDERED
TO BE IN THE TERRAIN OF THE DEFENDER (THE UNIT THAT WAS FIRST
CONTACTED). AS THIS MAY CHANGE DURING THE COURSE OF THE MELEE, THE
DEFENDER NEEDS TO BE NOTED.
4.4.1 Although light cavalry may change facing at no cost, they still require an appropriate
character to be able to do so.
4.4.1 There are five units in a battle, represented by ABCDE. They are faced by five enemy units
in a battle, represented by 12345. Let's say missile fire kills unit C. 12345 now move into
contact, centering on AB_DE. Is unit 3, who for argument's sake let's assume is a heavy cavalry
unit, and is unopposed with a one base wide gap where unit C used to be, allowed to take the
flank of B or D? YES
4.4.1 There are three units in group, represented by ABC. They are opposed by three units in a
group, represented by 123, and 2 units in a separate group, represented by 45. In the movement
phase, Group 123 moves into contact and centers on Group ABC. Group 45 also moves up, and
has enough movement to join on line with Group 123, so that they are now unopposed and lap
over Unit C's flank. May Unit 4 and Unit 5 take the flank and rear of Unit C, even though they
were not originally part of Group 123? YES
4.4.1 Can a unit receive the +1 bonuses for support and flanking from the same side? YES
4.4.5 All units are allowed to move through bow units. If a unit with a 3 inch move attempts to
pass through a bow unit, it can't clear since it need as a
minimum 80mm of movement. The solution to this question is that the bow unit becomes
attached following the movement.
4.6.0 Charge bonuses apply for all moves to contact, including charging, follow up moves
(including turns immediately after a follow up to face a new enemy), and compulsory out of
control moves. All target units contacted would therefore get the when charged bonuses in the
reference table if contacted from the front. All target units subject to panic must make panic
checks.
4.7 Is combat simultaneous, or does each combat have an effect on subsequent melees?
COMBAT ORDER IS AT THE PHASING PLAYER'S DISCRETION, AND IS VERY
IMPORTANT. ALL MELEES MAY HAVE AN EFFECT ON SUBSEQUENT MELEES BY
POTENTIALLY PROVIDING OR REMOVING FLANK AND REAR MODIFIERS,
CUTTING SUPPORT, BLOCKING LINES OF RETREAT FOR DOUBLE-DEMORALIZED
UNITS, ETC.
4.7.1 Support is mutually provided only by units facing in the same direction.
Examples of panic rolls and subsequent results:
1. Mounted knight charges levy. Levy passes panic roll. Melee in this phase. 2. Mounted knight charges levy. Levy is demoralized by panic roll. Melee in this phase. If the levy is beaten in combat but not doubled, he recoils, and the Mounted Knight must follow (unless flanked or reared, in which case he must turn to face), and, since he is continuing an existing combat, does NOT receive the charge bonus next melee, and no out-of-control roll is required for following up. 3. Mounted knight charges levy. Levy rolls on panic table and gets double demoralized result. Levy retreats one base width. Mounted Knight must follow (Foot Knight would be allowed a choice). Melee in this phase. Mounted knight gets the charge bonus, but a second panic check is not required. 4. Mounted knight charges levy. Levy rolls for panic and is destroyed. Mounted Knight must follow (again, Foot Knight would have a choice). Mounted knight rolls to stay in control. If he passes, he may at his choice turn to face a new enemy if one is available (and will receive the charge bonus and force a panic check, if required). Any melees and panic rolls are made in the next phase, although he is eligible to add any modifiers for flank or rear bonuses (or support, if infantry), and those pluses are applied immediately in this phase to any subsequent combats. If he fails his control check, he moves his full distance, is demoralized, and if he hits an enemy all panic checks and melees are fought next phase (he will again get the charge bonus and force a panic check, if required), but any flank and rear bonuses apply immediately. 5. To keep things in order, first finish ALL normal movement. Then accomplish panic checks one at a time all the way through to completion of follow-ups and out of control moves. Then melees one at a time, completing all follow-ups and out of control moves. All modifiers from previous combats affect new combats immediately, but no new melees or panic checks are resolved till next phase. 6. Do when charged bonuses apply if contacted from the flank or rear? ONLY IF THE
CHARGING/FOLLOWING UP UNIT STARTED IN THE CHARGED UNIT'S ARC OF FIRE.
LIGHT HORSE UNITS RECEIVE THE WHEN CHARGED BONUS AT ALL TIMES DUE
TO A 360 DEGREE ARC OF FIRE.
Note: Panic tests are required when a panic-causing unit takes the flank or rear of a unit subject
to panic.
Note: Remember that any mounted unit that destroys its opponent does NOT make a roll to determine if it goes out of control when it is also engaged from the flank or rear. It must turn to face an enemy on the flank first (flanked unit's choice), or to the rear if the flanks are unengaged. This is simply a continuation of an existing melee.
Reference Table
1. Does a pike unit's +2 vs. cavalry and a crossbow unit's +1 for pavisiers apply even if charged from the flank or rear? YES 2. Is there any difference between charging and moving into contact? NO 3. When do charging bonuses apply? ANY TIME AN ELIGIBLE UNIT MOVES INTO CONTACT WITH A NEW ENEMY UNIT. THIS COULD BE A NORMAL CHARGE/MOVE, A FOLLOW-UP AND TURN TO FACE AFTER A SUCCESSFUL ROLL TO STAY IN CONTROL, OR AN OUT-OF-CONTROL MOVE. BONUSES DO NOT APPLY IF A UNIT FOLLOWS A RECOILING UNIT THAT WAS DOUBLE-DEMORALIZED AS A RESULT OF MELEE. THIS IS CONSIDERED TO BE A CONTINUATION OF AN EXISTING COMBAT. 4. Note: The when charged bonus is allowed whenever the charging unit starts in the receiving unit's arc of fire, no matter where the chargers end up. Normally this is the front arc, though with light cavalry it is a 360 degree arc. This bonus only applies when the receiving unit is unengaged. 5. Note: Pavisier and weapon bonuses are not when charged bonuses. Pavisier's are extra troops, and weapons like the pike gain benefits only against certain troop types. These apply in all melees. 6. There is a slight inconsistency when comparing the Bowfire Table and Rally characteristics. For the Bowfire Table, 10+ means an 11 or greater, while a Rally of 5+ means a 5 or greater.
Army Lists 1. If army lists state that a given percentage may be of one troop type, may you go over by one whole unit? For example, if allowed 20% MAA2 in a 750 ecu army, which is 150 ecus, may you go over by one unit and select 8 MAA2 for 160 ecus? YES 2. Allied Lords are not restricted like free companies in their unit selection. They can have any unit in their national list.
Figures as used in the text 1. FIGURE 6. Regarding column to line or line to column formation changes, which unit is stationary and used as the reference for the move? The center unit or the lead unit in front? THE LEAD UNIT'S FRONT EDGE IS USED FOR FORMATION CHANGES Note: This figure appears to have slipped into DOK from LPE without a thorough explanation.
Basically, if your units were in a column, then you can form up to four units on line per turn.
