A resident of Taber for the past 38 years, Joseph Merkl passed away here Wednesday, at the age of 69. He was born in Sokolovac, Yugoslavia Sept. 9, 1893 and was educated there. In 1918 he marred Anna Horvath and they emigrated to Canada to 1925 coming to Taber as sugar beet farmers. Mr. Merkl retired from the farm in 1958, residing in Taber since that time and taking seasonal employment at the local canning factory. Prayers were said at Humphries Funeral Home Thursday evening and a funeral service was conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday from St. Augustine's Roman Catholic church with Rev. C. J. Lyons officiating. Pallbearers were John Merkl, Peter Kronsteln, John F. Sekura, Steve Tamtom, John Milder and Adam Horvath. Interment was In Taber's Memorial Gardens with funeral directors Humphries Funeral Home of Taber in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his widow Mrs. Anna Merkl of Taber, three daughters Mrs. Steve (Katie) Toruk and Mrs. Chester (Elizabeth) Rudolf both of Taber and Mrs. John (Teressa) Fritz of Genesee, Alberta, 10 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren; also two brothers Frank of London, Ontario and Lawrence of Taber, and three sisters Mrs. Cecilia Shielts of Brazil, Mrs. Elizabeth Bartok of Argentina and Mrs. Teressa Kichler in Germany.

Mrs. Anna Merkl of Taber beloved wife of the late Mr. Joe Merkl passed away on Wednesday April 28, 1976 at the age of 79 years. Born in Yugoslavia the late Mrs. Merkl came to Canada in 1928 settling in Taber where she resided until the time of her passing. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Katie Turuk and Mrs. Chester (Elizabeth) Rudolf both of Taber, Mrs. John (Teresa) Fritz of Warburg, Alberta; 13 grandchildren and eight great - grandchildren. Friends may meet for prayers in Reardon's Funeral Chapel on Friday, April 30th (tonight), 1976 at 8 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine's Catholic Church on Saturday, May 1st, 1976at 11 a.m. with Father Tim Boyle celebrant. Interment to follow in Taber Memorial Garden. Funeral arrangements by REARDON'S FUNERAL SERVICE LTD., Taber.
