MERKL - John Stephen
John Stephen Merkl passed away peacefully at Foothills Hospital on April 22, 2003 at the age of 72 with his family by his side. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife and soulmate of forty-eight years, Jean; his children, Brian (Linda) of Calgary, Brad (Patty) of Sherwood Park, Roxanne (David) Latimer of Medicine Hat; and his grandchildren, Kevin, Chelsea, Sarah, Payden, Willie, Joel and Jonnie. He is also survived by his father Stephen Sr. of Calgary; and his two brothers, Joe (Margaret) and Steve (Irma) of Brooks; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his mother in 1994. John was born on February 7, 1931 in Redcliffe, Alberta and grew up on a farm near Brooks, Alberta. He moved to Calgary where he met Jean Persinger and they were married in 1955. John worked at Union Packing for eighteen years and the next twenty-four years at Crescent Heights High School as the Business Manager. He loved fishing, camping and especially spending time with his grandchildren. John had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke. John loved to sing and play the guitar and was a member of the Renfrew Ramblers. A Memorial Service and celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 1:00 p.m., at Renfrew United Church, 956 Radnor Avenue N.E., Calgary.
