The family of the late Katherine (Merkl) McDermott is saddened to announce her passing Saturday, February 17, 1996 at the age of 90 years. Katherine was predeceased by her husband, Tony in 1949; infant daughter; her parents, Anton and Theresa Mauser; and brother John Mauser of Säo Paulo, Brazil.
Katherine was born October 25, 1905 in Sokolovac, Yugoslavia and was married there November 6, 1923. She left her homeland with her two children to join her husband in Regina, Saskatchewan on April 25, 1930. Their family was completed when their son Frank, was born in 1931. In 1943, the family moved to Taber, working in the beet fields, until they purchased their own farm. Her husband Tony passed away December 20 1949.
She married Henry McDermott of Spokane Washington on June 22, 1954. After his passing, she moved to Lethbridge in 1968 and in 1985 she returned to Taber to the Clearview Lodge. The past three years she has been a resident in the Extended Care of the Taber Hospital until the time of her passing.
Katherine is survived by her daughter, Theresa (Marvin) Valgardson of Taber; sons Tony (Irene) Merkl of Taber and Frank (Doreen) Merkl of Lethbridge; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Steve Merkl of Calgary; sister-in-law, Regina Merkl of Surrey, B.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Mike in Hungary; a sister, Eva, and a brother, Steve in Brazil; her extended family and numerous nieces and nephews. Grandma will be well remembered for her wonderful baking and cooking. She cooked at many of the weddings in earlier years. She also loved gardening and always had beautiful flowers, especially roses.
A Prayer service will be held in the Southland Funeral Chapel, (5006 48th Avenue)Taber on Wednesday, February 21, 1996 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine's Catholic Church, (5009 48th Avenue, Taber on Thursday, February 22, 1996 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Father David Meadows, celebrant. Interment to follow in the Taber Memorial Garden. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Taber Hospital Foundation, 4326 60 Avenue, Taber, Alberta, T1G 1Np or to the charity of one's choice.
