CHILDREN'S THEATRE PROGRAM
Ages 9-11
This is a class for drama students who are keen, focused, and ready to take the next level of theatrical schooling. It is not necessary to have prior dramatic training but they need to have proficient reading skills and be able to work well with others.
Students will continue to expand and develop basic theatrical skills in movement, voice, acting techniques, improvisation, stage presence and awareness. Beginning script work may be used depending on the Instructor’s discretion. Dramatic games and material are adapted to match their maturity and ability. They will also work on observation skills and team-building; essential skills, along with their skill development, to perform their creative work at the end of the term before an in-studio audience.
Group participation and commitment is crucial to the building of a working ensemble of students, therefore attendance is important and expected. Students are encouraged to join for more than one term as the class will work together to create a different presentation at the end of each session.
HOME LEARNERS PROGRAM
Ages 9-12
The studio has been offering drama and theatre classes for home schoolers for over a decade. These classes are wonderful ways for students to build confidence, community and collaborative skills.Funding is available through a number of home learning organizations including Self Design and Oak and Orca.
This next session is a wonderful opportunity for those students who are keen and ready for an in-depth immersion and creation of a full one act play of their own invention. Through improvisation, writing and collaborative discussion led by the instructor, the play will be built, rehearsed and performed at the end of the session.
The instructor will work to meet each student’s level of ability in all of these areas from reading, writing, creating and performing. An added component for those students who are interested in costumes or sound, lighting and set construction; will be an opportunity to create some of the production elements.
Also if a child is shy and does not want as large a part on stage as some others, they can be helping out backstage or be an influence in the creation of sound affects or playing the music.
Entrance into this class requires a readiness and maturity on the part of the student for this kind of focus, discipline and collective group effort. Part of the creative process is to be able to listen to others ideas and to sit quietly at times to write or discuss things. Attendance is extremely important for the class and the student to be successful in their efforts.
