DRAMA TIME FOR HOME LEARNERS
Ages 7–10

OVERVIEW:

This class introduces young ones to the world of drama and beginning theatrical skills through play at an age of development when they can benefit from it if there is no pressure to perform. The experience can include dramatic play, story enactment, imagination journeys, theatre games, music, and dance. "Let's pretend" is the norm, not just a child's game.

The emphasis is on process, rather than product, so teachers have the freedom to take as much time as needed with their classes. When a student prefers to watch instead of participate, because of shyness or fear, a teacher can allow it. This freedom applies also in the opposite situation when members of the class are extremely willing and skilled at dramatic activity. The teacher can become a participant and let the children lead the activities.

The class not only teaches dramatic skill development but can help children learn about emotions, problem solving, and relating to other people. Through their experiences with drama, students develop their imagination and confidence.

DRAMA TIME FOR HOME LEARNERS is a combination creative drama and beginning level acting class for young drama students. The teacher, incorporating movement, voice, improvisation, cooperative dramatic development, and stage awareness exercises will help build students understanding of theatre and of their own expression and skills.

The emphasis of the class is on skill development and dramatic play, but a part of the session will focus on a simple performance piece reflecting some of their work. This will be performed at the end of the session for a small in-studio audience.

Attendance is important for continuity. Students are encouraged to join for more than one term as the class will work together to create a different presentation at the end of each session.

The studio has been offering drama and theatre classes for home schoolers for over a decade. These classes are wonderful ways for students to build confidence, expression and collaborative skills.

Funding is available through many home learning organizations including Self Design and Oak and Orca.
