During the era of 1936 to 1974, radio listeners were magically transported to beautiful Hawai’i as they listened to the world famous Hawai’i Calls show (see photo below) … an era long past.
In 1983, Keoki Lake was asked by Maple Records of Toronto, to produce an LP of Hawaiian music. This album was featured on KCCN Honolulu, and KPOA Lahaina, Hawai’i. It was a multi-track effort in which Keoki played all the instruments: steel guitar, vibes, rhythm guitar, ukulele, and bass.
“Keoki” (Hawaiian for “George”), is the featured steel guitarist on 4 CD’s currently heard in Hawai’i.
In 1994, the Central Lions Recreation Centre asked Keoki to teach adults Hawaiian steel guitar and ukulele. “The response by the students enrolled was … ‘overwhelming!’”
“All my students … want to learn … and they all love Hawaiian music! Music for seniors keeps their minds active … and I’ll tell you one thing … I keep those minds really active! The eldest in my current group are two young people, who are both 83, each of whom enjoy the sessions.”
“With virtually no musical background, my current class of 20 Hawaiian steel guitar students and 15 ukulele students, (most of them seniors 55+) … have achieved remarkable results.”
The “Hawaiian Treasures” are reminiscent of that golden era of Hawaiian music, through the enchanting sound of Hawaiian steel guitars, ukuleles, vocalists and hula dancers. The band performs one hour concerts at numerous Senior Lodges and other venues.
