Chapter 8
Baby Fagle Seeds
In a milkweed cradle,
Snug and warm,
Baby seeds are hiding,
Safe from harm,
Open wide the cradle,
Hold it high!
Come, Mr. Wind,
Help them fly.

Baby Fagles are looked after by wee gentle
Cowzie creatures who are always anxious to please. I was
first introduced to Cowzies in a book by 'BB'. If you ever spot
a Cowzie you would think it a most curious little critter. They are
actually quite comical looking, with characters to match, and you would find it
very difficult not to smile at one. At first glance you would think you were
looking at a very fat squirrel that lacked arms, legs and indeed even faces.
Their faces are hidden under long mop like hair and their bodies are much like a
round toy teddy bear. A Cowzie is actually an animal that co-exists and is a
true friend of both Gnomes and Fagles. Every baby Fagle is tended to by no less
than two Cowzie critters. Cowzie families can number in the
hundreds!
When resting they like to lay on their backs,
with their two powder-puff webbed feet spread wide apart, much like a cat will
do before a warm fire or while enjoying itself under warm sun rays. A
Cowzie has a unique trait. When frightened a Cowzie will shrink to half its size
an amazing feat. In less than a moment, it can shrink itself by laying its
hair flat upon its head and body making it look like a shaggymane mushroom. Have
you ever watched a bird fluffing itself and then drawing its feathers back? This
is similar to what a Cowzie will do but in reverse. When at ease it will appear
fluffy; when frightened is will look elongated and stick-like. Should you
happen to spot two or more extraordinary Cowzie critters, by watching
their fur going flat and then bushing out again, you will see
them think and communicate by the action of their fur. All the while
you will hear a most curious bubbling sound emanating from them similar to the
sound of a budgie bird.
A Cowzie has a coat that is a mix of coarse hair
and soft fur similar to a seed from a milkweed plant. They can remain
motionless for exceptionally long periods of time and are often overlooked as
mushrooms! In water they are expert swimmers often swimming alongside
water voles and otters.
As I mentioned, baby Fagles are cared for by a
group of Cowzies. They ensure that they are well nourished and provide hours of
fascination. Each baby Fagle will have a tiny baby Cowzie toy which it will
treasure all its life. Gnome children craft these little Fagle toy
Cowzies filling them with love and joy.
