The Gnomes of Mushroom Lane©

Mayor Rich resides in Mushroom Lane, in an elaborate mushroom house, with his children and lovely wife Lizzi. On nights when the stars shine brightly in the sky, and the moon is full, Mayor Rich will venture outdoors to capture the power of moon rays in two ancient Clan Crystals. The Mayor stores the Crystals in a special oak casket until he sits with Mushroom Lane Council Members to discuss important Clan developments. After all Council Members have presented their development ideas Mayor Rich will bring out the Crystals. Each gnome, who is to participate in the development, will proceed to place one hand on each of the crystals; energy will transfer from these ancient vessels to the gnome enabling the gnome to perform his or her task by providing expert knowledge.

Imagine wanting to put together something mechanical, build a bridge or fix your plumbing and not have to consult a twenty-page "How To" book! Mayor Rich is the keeper of the Clan Medallion, which symbolizes that he is in charge of the Clan Crystals. Should anyone, other than the Mayor, attempt to remove the Crystals from the oak casket the magic Medallion will glow red. The Mayor decides when it is time to pass the Clan Medallion on and retire.

Here you see Mayor Rich pictured in front of his house wearing the Clan Medallion and holding up the two Clan Crystals so they can absorb moon rays. Notice The Gnomes of Mushroom Lane prefer to allow their clothes to air-dry although they are very modern and have solar lights! Lizzi enjoys the scent of clothes fresh off the line and takes pleasure in listening to the music of nature while hanging the clothes on the line.

I hope you enjoyed this episode from the new series The Gnomes of Mushroom Lane. Mushroom Lane is a registered trademark of Cornish Heritage Farms. The mushroom homes used throughout this series are part of a set marketed as rubber stamps. This month's featured Mushroom Lane home stamp is #SL-2414PUMSC #12 (approximately 4 x 5 inches) and can be ordered by contacting liz@cornishheritagefarms.com or by visiting the Cornish Heritage Farms' website at www.cornishheritagefarms.com

Mayor Rich is not part of this stamp - he was cut out and placed in front of his home using a small foam pop-up-dot giving this picture card a super 3-dimensional look. The crystals are flat back, hot fix, Swarovski crystals. The moon was stamped on in black ink and then coated with LuminArte Twinkling H20 - Heavenly White making the man in the moon disappear and reappear when the card is tilted. Simply magic! LuminArte semi-transparent self-blending water colors are also available from Cornish Heritage Farms. They are non-toxic and archival safe and come in great individual jars of solid cakes. Dip in your wet paintbrush and apply it like any other water color or apply it directly to rubber stamps! Beware...once you try this amazing product you will want to paint all day! To learn more about LuminArte go to www.luminarteinc.com

The inside of the front of this card contains the story. The note insert is white paper with a "White Cap" female gnome stamped on it. Do you remember the story of the "White Cap" gnomes? Come back next month to find out more about a very special White Cap gnome who resides in Mushroom Lane.

Book Review

“Strange Little Christmas Visitors” – by HearthSong, illustrations in the style of Elisabeth Buzek, verse written by Anne Peer from an idea by Elisabeth Buzek. It was printed by Breitschopf GmbH & CoKG, in Vienna, Austria, and a special edition was produced on behalf of HearthSong in Madison, Virginia. ISBN 3-7004-4051-0.

This precious book is beautifully illustrated. The style of writing is rather like prose. I can’t say it’s poetry per se, but it is nevertheless unique and adds charm to the story.

The scene of the visit is an adorable woodland house blanketed in snow. A young boy and girl are helping their mother sweep and prepare for Christmas.

When a large group of wandering Gnomes sees the cozy little cottage, they decide to forget hunting for mushrooms and berries and enter the house. They know there will be lots of food for Christmas morning.

When the time appears right, the Gnomes and their pet mouse climb through a window and playfully start making mischief in the house. They quietly enter a bedroom where a child is sleeping, and they find lots of food in the kitchen. A few Gnomes accidentally fall right into the Christmas cake (when trying to taste a cherry). All the while, they’re trying not to disturb Murphy the cat.

When the mother and her children awake the next morning, they all scold the cat. Murphy is confused, as he didn’t do a single thing except keep warm sleeping near the stove all night. The Gnomes make a mad dash for the attic and scurry around in the attic rafters, tripping and trying to hide – but Murphy’s four legs run faster than theirs. The two children see them all running back down the stairs with Murphy behind them – but they tell Murphy to leave the Gnomes alone !

The mother and children tell the Gnomes they’re welcome to stay in the house and share Christmas.

The family is complete, and Murphy is content peacefully napping next to the mother’s rocking chair.

It’s a cute story beautifully illustrated. The Gnomes didn’t mean any harm. They just got carried away when they were in a group and didn’t stop to think. That’s a good lesson for children.

Early November Potato Blessing Day

The origins of this tradition remain a closely guarded secret. Some gnomes believe its purpose is to keep the eyes of potatoes closed, instead of sprouting. Others think it stems from the days when potatoes first were brought from America and that it was practised by the Painted gnomes of Virginia.

November 6 Election Day - Gnominate-a-Gnome

On this day every year ballots are delivered by the gnomes. It is their Election Day...but no human has been able to discover why a gnome is elected or to what position! What do you think?

Holiday Thoughts for Gnomers …

… which is the word I like for Gnome collectors/lovers (like me). Technically (as most of you know), we’re “Nanologists” – but that can require too much time to explain.

Someone asked me how Gnomes handle holidays in countries that don’t celebrate Christmas. Humans don’t know the answer … but I suspect that Gnomes make sure they have a part in helping many of the world’s wholesome celebrations as best they can.

There are probably many collectors who don’t celebrate Christmas, but they still appreciate Gnomes. Gnomes are beloved and admired by people from all backgrounds and walks of life.

We humans have no idea of how many countries they live in, but their having a central language has a definite advantage over all the languages humans speak.

No matter where they live, Gnomes fit right in. They just might not be seen (or even recognized as Gnomes if someone does happen to see one).

Whether or not you set up a Christmas tree, be sure to place special holiday greenery near your Gnomes to help them celebrate. Create a special holiday table arrangement with them amidst greens and pinecones (real or artificial) … and they’ll feel festive. Remember: It’s their special season for gift-giving and spreading loving holiday wishes. They’ve worked toward that all year!

Gnome-shaped cookies are always in season, anywhere in the world … just like Gnomes!

This little fellow was painted on canvas by a store in New York City at the time the book “Gnomes” first came out. I hadn’t been needlepointing for very long, and the canvas was a #14 – but I had to have him.

I did his beard and eyebrows in a kind of split stitch and didn’t like him suspended in mid-air …so I made a grass base and added a few little fern stitch plants. The saying is perfect for him. The half moon in the corner has clear beads stitched in with a silver metallic thread.

I worked on him daily as I rode the bus from New Jersey to New York City. I even took him on a trip to Italy -- and came up with his raised beard idea on a bus headed to Pompeii.

He lives on my bed in the midst of other needlepoint pillows. If anyone is interested, I can make a photocopy of the pillow that can be used to trace the design onto a piece of canvas.

It’s always fun to complete a project and make it into a pillow or frame it. There are certain projects, however, like this little Gnome, that you genuinely miss working on when they’re done.

Hello

Just wondering if you can help? I write for various UK women's magazines, including Bella, Real People, Woman and Woman's Own. I'd like to write a feature on someone with an unusual collection.

I saw your website and wondered whether you might know anyone suitable? ideally I'm looking for someone British with a huge collection of gnomes who has a bit of a story behind it... maybe they've had to move home to to house their collection, or it's insured for vast sums. or maybe their partner doesn't like their collection. maybe they even met their partner through a shared interest of gnomes! the quirkier the angle the better...

Hope to hear from you soon.
Many thanks Olivia
