The Gnomes of Mushroom Lane©

Last month you were introduced to Skip aka "Leftie". Skip resides in Mushroom Lane, in a quaint little mushroom house, with a well equipped mushroom shop in the back. On nights when the stars shine brightly in the sky, Skip is out and about in search of tin to recycle. Here you see him bringing home a discarded can that he intends to turn into a set of new mixing bowls for the Mushroom Lane, Mayor's wife Lizzi. Evidently, the children seem to have misplaced all her mixing bowls! What a surprise Lizzi will get when she opens up her door to discover a set of shiny new bowls left on her doorstep. Mayor Rich is a soft-hearted gnome who gets along well with other gnomes, wee folk and nature's creatures who visit Mushroom Lane. He is a jolly gnome who adores his wife and children; so to keep the children out of trouble, and to keep Lizzi happy, he arranged to have Skip craft a set of new bowls as a surprise.

Above you see Skip pictured in front of his house and shop all aglow welcoming him home from his trip to a local park. Notice  The Gnomes of Mushroom Lane are very modern and have solar lights! The antennae you see on the top of Skip's house connects to some highly sophisticated equipment he uses to communicate with his neighbors.

I hope you enjoyed this episode from the new series The Gnomes of Mushroom Lane. Mushroom Lane is a registered trademark of Cornish Heritage Farms. The mushroom homes used throughout this series are part of a set marketed as rubber stamps. This month's featured Mushroom Lane home stamp is #SL-2401PUMSC #17 (approximately 4 x 5 inches) and can be ordered by contacting liz@cornishheritagefarms.com or by visiting the Cornish Heritage Farms' website at www.cornishheritagefarms.com

Skip is not part of this stamp - he was cut out and placed in front of his home and shop using a small foam pop-up-dot giving this picture card a super 3-dimensional look. But, if you also want Skip he is now available as a rubber stamp. See the Shopping Basket for further details.

Book Review

“The Gnome From Timsgaard” -- from a story by Vilhelm Bergsoe, published in 1974 by Angus & Robertson Publishers, illustrated by Ib Spang Olsen, translated by Virginia Allen Jensen. (ISBN is 0-207-95547-6)

This is little Tim. He wasn’t easy to write about, but he’s sure cute looking. He has a broad range of personality quirks that make it difficult to pin a single label on his complex personality.

I’d say he’s a confounding mixture of part curmudgeon, part rascal, part bored grump, certainly taciturn, and most assuredly not blessed with the happy personality we associate with Gnomes. Perhaps the cold, dark winters of Scandinavia had a lot to do with his personality, and the fact that the Timsgaard estate owner wasn’t a pleasant, appreciative person.

Timsgaard was a great estate in Jutland (Scandinavia) where Tim had come to live. The estate is gone now, but Tim lived there for a long time. He slept in the attic area of a barn loft adjacent to the main manor house, and food was provided for him.

Over time, Tim had somehow set himself up as having a negative “controlling” influence over certain aspects of the estate. He wasn’t helpful like a good Gnome.

When a nice young man named Sorn gets hired to work at the estate, the squire deliberately behaves like an arrogant and shameless show-off. (Too much of that attitude had already rubbed off on estate workers – and on Tim.)

Sorn is told where he’ll sleep, and that’s where he encounters crusty little Tim. Tim resents having to share the space with Sorn. Little by little, however, Sorn’s kindness and ways of humoring Tim start to affect Tim. Magical help is even offered to Sorn at harvest time.

When Sorn happily marries, he gets his own cottage and land. His sweet wife is kind to Tim. When Christmas comes, the squire at the manor house doesn’t bother to leave porridge for Tim – so Tim finally, once and for all, marches his little self right out of the manor house for good. Sorn’s wife is happy to feed him.

Sorn and his wife later come into prosperity. Tim remains in their home.

Interestingly, after Tim left the Timsgaard manor house, the entire estate rapidly deteriorated and buildings crumbled from neglect.

Monthly Contest

Royal Greetings,

Well it's a whole new month and time for our monthly draw. I have started to write a new series called, "The Gnomes of Mushroom Lane", and would enjoy having members submit names for the characters who will be featured in this new series.

You have been introduced to 'Skip' who is the main character. The Gnomes of Mushroom Lane have a Church run by a very special gnome. He is pictured here in this email. To enter this month's contest, take time for a cup-of-tea with him; see if you can come up with a unique name.

Submit your suggested name by September 28, 2006. The winners will receive a free mushroom house rubber stamp from their Mushroom Lane© collection produced by Cornish Heritage Farms who have kindly offered to donate this month's prizes!

Good luck to all who enter! The winner will be notified by email and all entries will be posted to the October issue. Remember only members are entitled to enter our draws.

Marafae G1 I'd like to submit the name "Whisper" a smaller than usual Gnome who speaks timidly and is much smaller so others have a difficult time hearing him.....they always think he speaks in a whisper. He's quiet enough but kind hearted.....he has the gift of healing. He's popular with all animals and children. His favorite colors are emerald green as are his eyes....he was an orphaned and somehow found his way to the church. Hope you can use it.....thanks. FIRST PRIZE WINNER!
Patrick G285 This afternoon after reading this e-mail, I decided to let Patrick II and his son, Patrick III pay a visit to the Mushroom Lane Church, were they found this interesting gnome. He was preparing the altar some important ceremony tonight, that is when they began to talk to this gnome. He never gave out his name, but after this visit, both Patrick II and Patrick III thought that his name would be something like Murphy Cauldiron. So far, that is what I think too. His picture has a million words to it, such as brave, powerful, etc.. I myself do believe his name should be Murphy Cauldiron.
Mellow G295 His name: Elderberry

His characteristics: He is very old, wise, witty and somewhat of a prankster. He is shamanic - this is why he has been chosen to be the leader of the church. He can shape shift and do other magical things. He is much beloved and respected by the gnome community. P.S. LOVE his picture!! 2ND PRIZE WINNER!

My name is Palmer … and I just took another trip to Italy!

My human mother took me and my little pal Monk to Venice,

Citta di Castello, and Florence. The weather was so perfect.

Ever since Mom adopted me, I’ve lived in a special place in her bedroom. Monk was somewhere else when I arrived, until Mom decided to place him behind my home-made wind instrument when she was dusting one day. Monk had always sat in a corner of Mom’s dresser top.

I’m 10 in. tall (without my hat), and tiny Monk is 4 in. tall. He’d already accompanied her to many places around the world. When I arrived, however, Mom just had to take me along, too. She’s an avid Gnome collector.

You see, Monk and I had already quietly communicated in Mom’s bedroom … so you can imagine how happy we were to be joined and to know we’d go travelin’ as a twosome!

Monk and I went to Italy with her last year, too. First, our mother packed her carry-on suitcase. Then she picked us up, gave us a hug, and tucked us into a tote bag. Monk and I felt so safe and were cozy on a sweater. Just like last year, he held onto my right arm behind my wind instrument.

I had some idea of what was planned. Of course, Mom holds her tote bag close, and little “Monk” often didn’t want to look out. We’re also big on naps, so it was easy to just slip back down in the tote.

We visited lots of different places this time, but we stayed at hotels in Venice, Citta di Castello, and Florence. Italy’s ancient, timeless towns are hard to describe.

Below, I’m in Venice having breakfast with birds in the garden at the Hotel Al Sole. It was beautiful, with hanging vines in bloom. Venice is so unique, but riding in canal boats was a bit scary. When friends tried to take a picture of me sitting on the edge of the Rialto Bridge, let me tell you: My whiskers were twitching! Mom held onto me so tight, but that was a bit too daring for me. (I never complain though.)

After a few days in Venice, we drove south and west to Citta di Castello (in Umbria), to again see

“Bl. Little Margaret” in the Church of San Domenico. (It’s only open for Sunday Mass right now.)

I look “lost” in the picture below, sitting in a humongous antique bed in Citta di Castello and on my favorite chair in our room at the Villa San Michele in Florence (Fiesole).

The Hotel Tiferno in Citta di Castello is “the” place to stay there. It’s charming, historic, and beautifully furnished with antiques. Their immaculate dining room serves a wonderful (complementary) buffet breakfast. It’s a short walk from the Hotel Tiforno to the Church of S. Domenico … where Margaret’s little body lies uncorrupted in a glass coffin under the high altar. It was a very emotional experience. Monk and I are barely visible sitting on the steps in the photo below.

Many people don’t know about Margaret. She was born in 1287 in a castle on top of a very steep mountain in Metola -- a tiny village in a forest area outside Citta di Castello. Metola is over in the Marches region, east of Citta di Castello. Only the castle’s tower remains. The exact date of Margaret’s birth is unknown, but she died on April 13, 1320. Sadly, she was born blind and very hunchbacked. One leg was also considerably shorter than the other. She grew to be just over 4 ft. tall. Her life story can be found on www.avemaria.org.

Margaret was known for her kind, gentle demeanor. She was well aware that her parents regarded her as a repulsive embarrassment, but she still felt love for them and even felt guilty about her condition. She was very religious, possessed mystical qualities, performed many miracles, helped the poor, the ill, and even prisoners. Everyone loved Margaret … except her parents.

The day after we arrived in Citta di Castello, we drove northeast to Margaret’s birthplace castle in Metola. The castle itself has long been a ruin, but the tower remains. It’s incredibly high up on a narrow dirt road. We could see the castle’s tower as we slowly drove up the steep, winding road. A local historian and friend had checked it out for us. Our car followed his the whole distance. You can get to the top of the mountain if you find a side road to the village of “Palazzi” (off the main road driving a distance out from Citta di Castello).

After a few days in Citta di Castello, we felt sad to leave -- but it was time to head west to Florence. When little Monk and I heard Mom discussing an ancient monastery hotel by the name of “Villa San Michele,” we knew it was going to be extra special.

Monk and I don’t know what is planned for a year or two from now, but we know we’ll be included. We’re so grateful that our Mom is a true …GNOME DEVOTEE G9
