Their friendship becomes a bond that ties them together for the rest of their lives, with a > little help from the old wise gnome known as Hemperseed. Noüm and Gaylin find what they are looking for and return home, only to hear that life is not so easy for their cousins to the north.

The Gnome In Love

DSCF4374.JPG (46700 bytes)The elders say, and it is convenient to pay attention, that a long time ago there lived a gnome named Engumiao.

Engumiao was a mine gnome. He took care of the earth’s treasures: gold, precious stones, silver… and in particular, he protected a ruby mine.

One morning, while he polished a few stones and put in place those that had fallen at night, he heard a noise on the surface and, swimming across the earth, as only gnomes know how to, he went up to see what was happening.

Up there he found a beautiful creature; a female gnome that, he thought, had all possible qualities. At first, he couldn’t even talk. He tried to say something funny, but only incoherent sounds came out of his mouth.

The female gnome said her name was Sabina and she asked him how to get to the chamomile prairie; where she was going to live with her relatives, the Green Stick gnomes (a family dedicated to placing dew drops on top of leaves and that Engumiao knew pretty well).

The poor gnome just managed to point to the right way, while he blushed so much that he looked as red as the hat he was wearing. Meanwhile, Sabina left in the direction Engumiao said, leaving him surprised.

Several days went by, in which Engumiao couldn’t stop thinking about her, until one day he finally decided to visit the Green Stick family. He put on pretty clothes, combed his hair and put on some wild lily perfume and left.

As he got closer to the house, he practiced what he was going to say, but when he remembered Sabina’s face, his tongue seemed to twist.

He arrived at the Green Stick’s house and knocked on the door. Sabina came to open the door and that which he feared came true: he couldn’t talk and, red as a tomato, turned around and left the place running, barely noticing the girl’s laughter.

Four or five times more, he tried to go to Sabina’s house, but every time, his legs started trembling and he couldn’t really talk would walk back home without really getting to her house.

One day, Engumiao was at the mine, watching sadly the rubies when he heard a noise on the surface. He went up to see what was going on and he found Mr. and Mrs. Green Stick screaming for help.

-The trolls! The trolls! They attacked us! - they yelled.

-And your niece, Sabina? - asked Engumiao.

-They took her! - they answered.

The news were like a bucketful of cold water on his head, and after a moment’s hesitation, he decided to go rescue Sabina.

Meanwhile, Sabina wasn’t doing so well. The trolls had locked her up in a cave. As it is well known, trolls are cannibals and like eating raw gnome’s flesh, that’s why she feared for her life.

Actually, in the cave, seven trolls were arguing and fighting to see who would eat her first.

After fighting for a day, they sat down to argue again.

-And if we use her as bait to capture more gnomes? – one of them asked.

-Yes! Certainly her friends are looking for her. Let’s leave the rock on the entrance open so that they can hear her scream and when they get here, we’ll capture them all and eat them.

-But the gnomes have a very good sense of smell and if they smell us…

-We’ll hide in another cave and wait for them! - they decided.

And so they did. In the meantime, Engumiao was following tracks left on the way (which wasn’t easy because trolls destroy everything on their way). “Once I get to the cave, I’ll enter yelling –he thought.- That way, with the echo they’ll think I brought a lot of people and certainly they will run away.”

And without knowing, he was heading straight for the trap the trolls set, hoping to catch a lot of gnomes.

He crossed a river helped by a turtle that took him on top of her, and convinced a bird to help him go to the top of a mountain, and he confided his plan in all of them:

-Once I enter the cave, I will yell as loud as I can so that the trolls think that we’re an army of gnomes and surely they will run away.

But he didn’t know that he alone was going to fall into a trap set by those trolls.

When he finally found the cave, he was sure his plan would work, but as soon as he saw her, he was left with no words. Very ashamed, he freed her and escaped as fast as he could. The trolls, who were waiting in a nearby cave, got tired of waiting for days and days.

Once they were safe, Sabina thanked Engumiao for his shyness, which had saved her life. And after that, she was sure to explain to him how to behave around girls!
