Maverick Cat Coalition is a federally registered charitable organization dedicated to providing protection, care, comfort and shelter to wild (feral), stray domestic and companion cats. Utilizing a Trap, Neuter/Spay and Return (TNR) program, Maverick Cat Coalition works to humanely reduce populations and the suffering of wild and domestic homeless cats in your community.

In the past, communities encountering a stray cat problem would typically catch the cats, take them from their site and have them euthanized This, however, did not solve the problem; as cats were removed, others quickly moved in to fill the "vacancies".

They tried a different approach: catch the cats, neuter/spay and release them back to the same location. Researchers noticed the colonies would then stabilize and, through attrition, naturally reduce in size. They concluded that TNR was an effective and humane method to control feral cat populations.

That's why Maverick Cat Coalition has joined with other animal protection groups around the world in adopting this progressive strategy.

What We Do

The Maverick Cat Coalition's goal is to trap and neuter feral and abandoned cats, then return them to their original site – providing the location is non-hostile and caretakers/feeders are available. Each cat is assessed for its potential to be (re)domesticated; good candidates will be placed at a cat shelter for rehabilitation and eventual adoption. Our goal is to alleviate the suffering of homeless cats and reduce their population by stabilizing colonies at manageable levels.

Homeless Cat

Appointments are booked through a telephone screener who will verify the legitimacy of each situation. Trappers and transporters go to the site and humanely trap the cats and bring them to a veterinary clinic. (Trappers follow a well-defined procedure with regard to the trap-neuter-release program.) In appropriate situations, traps may be lent to the caretakers of feral and abandoned cats to facilitate the process. Caretakers are supported with donations of cat food and materials for sheltering the cats (boxes, blankets, bowls, etc.); assistance and advice over the phone is offered as well – volunteers will help with regular feeding of the cat(s) if necessary.

The Maverick Cat Coalition works closely with shelters to monitor each cat’s progress in rehabilitation. Shelter managers often rely upon the field observations of trappers to help them assess cats – initial interactions and degrees of “friendly“ behavior (tails high, proximity, eye contact, etc.) are carefully noted before trapping begins. Shelter managers will also be assisted in transport of cats to and from homes, clinic, etc.

At each colony location information will be filed and monitoring of the cats will be ongoing to ensure that the population is stabilized and healthy. Photographs and field observations will be made to assist new volunteers and caretakers – in addition to providing the membership and other similarly-minded groups a valuable record of our efforts.
