Sunday, March 11, 2 pm at the Community House is the date for the
second Annual Metchosin Community Association Services Auction.
The first one last year was a real success with the 50 plus donated
services raising some $4,000 for the ongoing operation of the House and
community programs. The auction highlighted the generosity of local people
both donors and bidders, and the fun and laughter at the actual auction
carried on through when the winning bidders claimed their services.
Whether it was a delicious French style lunch served alfresco, a ride in a
1926 Model T Ford, a day's salmon fishing, a massage, and the dog whose
owner bid on the flea treatment may have enjoyed it! - what ever service
was generously donated, there were only happy reports heard about the
experience of using it.
Laura Gramada, who gamely acted as auctioneer despite having had no
experience of the job, gave an outstanding performance, with wit and charm
and moved the bidding on at a smart pace - no doubt her experience as a
Boston Marathon runner gave her the stamina and speed to do so well. She
has kindly agreed to be this year's auctioneer too.
The services already up for bids include many of the same ones as last
year plus some interesting new ones, and the list will be on the website
from February 20 on, with more items coming in as the auction date nears.
Type in MCA Service Auction and click on the link. The highest online bids
will be the starting bids at the live auction, and if none has been
received by March 11, then the reserve price will be the starting point
Even if you bid on line, try to attend the live auction. It is an
enjoyable event, with friendly rivalry, lots of laughs and free
refreshments. Mark your calendars and come along.
If you have a service you would like to donate, it would be most
welcome. Just contact the Community House at 250-478-5144, email: mcahouse@telus.net
or send the description, reserve price, name, and phone number, plus a
photo if possible, directly to jim@richallenger.com

The Community House will be the venue for a new program - a drop-in
"Café" for knitters.
Hand knitting seems to be back in fashion and wool shops these days
look like Aladdin's cave with yarns of jewel-like colours, exciting
textures and amazing wools which self-pattern. Informal groups of knitters
meet in cafes, including in the Greater Victoria area, to knit and chat
over their coffees. Knitting really lends itself to sociability as both
tongues and needles can move at the same time!
Wendy Mitchell, who processes wool from local sheep to the finished
articles, thought it time for Metchosin to have its own Knitting Café and
approached the Board of the Community House with the idea which was
immediately accepted. As the keenest knitter on the Board, I was happy to
take on the coordinating role. This also tied in with a request I had
received recently from Katie Turner, mother of two, who not only wanted to
learn to knit, but her son, Jim, aged 7, is eager for his mother to teach
him too. (Jim may know that knitting has not always been seen as a female
occupation - sailors, miners, and fishermen used to knit and many
traditional patterns come from them.)
So, knitters whether beginners to veterans, male or female, bring along
your needles, wools, ideas, patterns, and join us at the Community House.
We've decided to meet twice monthly, once in the day time and an evening
session which hopefully will suit working people. Our first sessions will
be Tuesday. February 14, 1-3 pm and the first evening one on Monday,
February 20, 7- 9 pm. A drop-in fee of $2 will help to cover the costs of
tea and coffee and rental of the Community House.
If you have any questions, or perhaps need a ride, please call me -
250-478-1197 or email laura.farquharson@shaw.ca
