The Ancestral File is a computerized file of millions of names. People
throughout the world are invited to send their genealogies to the
Ancestral File, through which the
information is made available for research.
The file links individuals into pedigrees showing their
ancestors and descendants. It contains genealogical
information on millions of individuals from many countries.
This information includes names, along with dates and
places of birth, marriage, and death. Most of the
information in the file is about deceased people.
The file also contains the names and addresses of
individuals who have contributed the information. The
file is updated periodically. The last update was January
1996.
You can use the file to display, print or copy to diskette
information that is in the file, make corrections already
on file, or find others who wish to coordinate research
efforts.
You can add your family file records to the Ancestral File by submitting a disc to:

The International Genealogical Index contains two files. The main File (1993 edition) of the International Genealogical Index (IGI) lists over 200 million names of deceased persons from throughout the world. The index does not contain records of living people. Many names in the index come from vital records from the early 1500s to 1885. Others have been submitted by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The
International Genealogical Index Addendum
version 2 contains over 84 million records (41.6 Million
additional records more than the last addendum).
The index is published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but the names are not limited to Church members or their ancestors.

The Social Security Death Index on compact disc is an index of 39.5 million deceased persons who had a social security number and whose death was reported to the Social Security Administration. The index mainly covers deaths between 1962 and the end of 1988. However, some records are as early as 1937.
The records, from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of the Social Security Administration, have been made available through the Freedom of Information Act. Since the Index relates only to deceased persons, no Rights of Privacy apply.
You do not need your ancestor's social security number to use this index.
The Military Index lists almost 100,000 men and women in the United States Military Service who died or were declared dead in Korea or Vietnam (Southeast Asia) from 1950 to 1975. This index includes the following:
At this time, two indexes from military records are
available:

Scottish Church Records is an index of
nearly ten million names listed primarily
in Church of Scotland (Presbyterian)
parish registers and similar records, also
including records from a few other denominations.
The index contains entries dating from the late 1500's
through 1854, with a few later entries. Information
in the index includes given names, surnames, parents
or spouse, gender, birth, christening or marriage date
and place, and source information.
Church of Scotland records (old parochial registers and Kirk Session registers) are an excellent source for information on names, dates, and places of births and marriages. They are the most used source of family information before 1855, when civil registration (government recording of births, marriages, and deaths) began in Scotland. They may include as much as 70 percent of the population of Scotland during that time. Most recent update was in 1995.
The orginal source on microfilm may contain additional information and should also be consulted.

The Family History Library Catalog lists and describes the records, books, microfilms, and microfiche in the Salt Lake City Family History Library. It does not contain the actual records, only descriptions of them. The records described in the catalog come from throughout the world, and include census records, birth records, family histories, church registers, and many other record types. It describes over 3 million books, microfilms, microfiche, maps and other materials.
The library catalog is available on compact disc and on microfiche, both of which are updated regularly. The latest edition of the catalog is August 1996.
