ISC Qualifying Tournamenthosted by Calgary Smoke June 3-5, 2005 ![]() The Fury headed to Calgary June 3rd to 5th to participate in the Calgary Smoke ISC qualifier tournament. It had been raining for much of the week leading up to the Friday night start, but the rain let off Friday morning and they were able to get the diamonds in playing shape for that night’s draw. The tournament featured a very high caliber of fastball. There were four senior A or ISC 1 teams, Calgary Smoke, Saskatoon Merchants, Saskatoon Black Sox’s (2004 National Champs), and the Vancouver Merchants. Rounding out the field were three senior B or ISC 2 teams and a junior A team; Lloydminster Dodgers, Calgary Cobras, Camrose Fury, and the Saskatoon Jr. Diamondbacks. The Fury opened up the tournament, on a very sloppy field, 9:00am Saturday against the Saskatoon Jr. Diamondbacks. Scott Galenza started pitching for the Fury throwing 4 strong innings before a sore shoulder forced him out of the game. The game was very close through out, tied going into the bottom of the 7th when Jason Gumpinger hit a leadoff, first pitch, walk off, home run to give the Fury a 5 to 4 win. The winning pitcher was Brian Graham pitching the final three innings allowing two runs with 3K’s. Jeff Berry and Scott Galenza went 3 for 3 and 2 for 2 respectively. The Fury’s next game was at 1:00pm against the Calgary Smoke. The offence had a very hard time getting anything going against ex-national team pitcher Frank Cox from Nova Scotia, losing 7 to 0 in 5 innings. Brian Graham took the loss pitching 5 innings with 3K’s, 6 walks, and 4 hits allowed. The final game of the day came at 3:00pm against the Saskatoon Black Sox’s. Again the offence couldn’t get anything going against the world class pitching the Black Sox’s had throwing for them. The few hits that were collected came from Ryan Galenza 2 for 3, Scott Galenza 1 for 3, and Jeff Berry 1 for 3. Mother nature took over the tournament form there on, the skies open up and laid a blanket of rain on an all ready saturated playing field. The tournament was called on Sunday morning with the Fury ending the play with a 1-win and 2-loss record. Recap by Ryan Jacobsen |
