Creating a Logo

A picture is worth a thousand words

Your logo is the image that is going to convey your "corporate identity" and represent you and your product when you are not there. And it’s going to be everywhere! So make sure it represents you in the way that you want.

Logo creation is one area where you probably do not want to do it yourself (unless of course you are a graphic designer!). My recommendation is to spend the time and money to do it right, or don't do it at all.

If you decide to hire a graphic designer to create your logo, make sure you do some leg work before they start working on your image. Give them the attribute list you came up with when thinking of a business name. Make a list of images that you think might convey a sense of your business. Think of your business' personality: serious or  humorous? All of this information will help to get you and your designer on the same page, and for them to come up with an appropriate image.

Request 3 or 4 samples from your designer to choose from. Ask friends and family (especially those who are representative of your target market) for their opinions. Once you've made your choice, make sure your designer provides your final product to you in several different formats (tif, gif, pdf, eps, bmp) as well as in both colour and black and white. This will make it easier for you to use the logo down the road when creating your marketing materials.

The Simple DIY logo

If you absolutely don't have any money to spend on logo creation right now, then here is a simple DIY to get you started. Just take your business name and mix and match the fonts. Examples:

SturdyKids Sturdy Kids
Sturdy Kids Sturdy Kids
Sturdy Kids

You can also do a simple text reversal in a box:

Sturdy

KIDS

Sturdy

KIDS

DIY Tip: Be careful not to try and throw too many fonts together, more than 2 at a time (one serif and one sans serif) is dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. And by dangerous I mean will look at best amateurish and at worst like a dog's breakfast. Probably not the image you're going for.
