DIYPR - The Basics
Do-It-Yourself Public Relations for Work-At-Home-Moms

What is public relations?

Your home-based business’ public relations will consist of a variety of materials and activities which are intended to convey a positive image to your customers and prospective customers (translation: stuff you are going to say, do, or give to people to convince them to buy your product or service).

Under the general umbrella of public relations, we can include marketing, advertising, media relations, and promotions. For example maintaining relationships with the media via the preparation and distribution of press releases, establishing a visible presence at trade shows, creating marketing materials such as brochures, stationery, or a web site, or even just handing out your business card.

Anything you do to tell anyone about your business can be described as public relations. If you keep this in mind, you can find opportunities to do "PR" for your business throughout your day.

For instance, come up with a short "live commercial" about yourself and your business that you can use to grab the attention of a new prospect that you meet at a networking event (or another mom you run into at your Wednesday play group). With the right commercial you have an easy way to introduce your business naturally.

Your commercial needs to include the following: Who are you? Who is your company? What does your company do? Does the prospect need your help / product? What is their / your next step? Here is my example:
