Clearing the Path

Clearing the Path encompassed a series of projects that addressed class advocacy, policy development and structural change.

Sex workers were trained in organizational structure, policy review and development.  This group became PACE Society's Policy Development Team who spent all of 2005 conducting a content analysis of the policy manuals of women's organizations throughout Canada to develop internal policies for PACE Society.

In addition, this group worked with academics to address the harms experienced by sex workers as subjects of research by developing ethical guidelines for research among sex workers and other marginalized and criminalized populations as well as a tips brochure explaining participant rights and research obligations.

Research Ethics: A Guide for Community Organizations and Tips for Individuals Participating in Community-Based Research are both available on the PACE web site under Publications.

Living in Community (LIC)

Living in Community(LIC) was a two-year community project to develop strategies to reduce the negative impacts of sex work on all community members.

LIC was a collaboration of community and government organizations, including sex worker organizations and current or former sex workers.

Sex work affects individuals, families and communities in many ways and there was a realization that something different needed to be done on all sides to make it safer for sex workers and for other communities groups, including residents and businesses.

What were the goals of LIC?

  • To facilitate informed community discussions with sex workers, residents, community groups and businesses about the health and safety impacts of sex work.
  • To develop an action plan, including policy and practical strategies, to improve conditions for all community members related to the effects of sex work.

The Community Initiative for Health and Safety (CIHS) was a project which has been initiated by LIC and was housed at the PACE Society. You can learn more at www.livingincommunity.ca .

The Community Initiative for Health and Safety developed an on-line and print tool-kit. You can find the toolkit on-line at http://www.livingincommunity.ca/toolkit Copies of the print tool-kit can be requested from PACE Society at pace-admin@telus.net
