Eden
The first Eden’s in Gaspe were John
and his brother Joseph. John and
Joseph Eden were born and raised in Stokesley, Yorkshire, England. They were the sons of John Eden. John came to Gaspe around
1827 with his brother Joseph, wife Sarah Burwood and son John Henry. They
settled in the Wakeham area. John and Sarah Burwood had 5
children. They were John Henry, Sarah Burwood, Jane Amelia, Charlotte Barbara,
and Mary Ellen. Sarah Burwood died in 1837 and was buried in the O’Hara
Cemetery. John then remarried in 1838 to
Ellen Maria Boyle and moved to her home that stood in front of Wakeham’s old
cemetery. They had no children. Ellen died in 1859.
John
married again in 1862 to Helena Laws. They had 7 children. There names were Helena Sarah, Florence
Elizabeth, Arthur John, Beatrice Maude, Edith Myra, Alfred George, and Edwin
Charles. John Eden had many occupations
- farmer, School Master, Justice of the Peace, Land Crown Agent, and Post
Master.
His brother Joseph married in 1832 to Sarah Ellen
Patterson. They lived in
Wakeham and had
11 children, William James, Sarah
Adelaide, Ellen Jane, Joseph, Annabella, John Albert, Emily Caroline, Benjamin
Malcolm, Alice, Mary Alma, and Francis George.
Joseph’s occupations were Sailor, Merchant and Trader.
