Spelling Variation: Paterson

John Paterson arrived in Sunny Bank about 1764. He was an officer in the British Armed Forces.  It is believed that he married around 1760, but no one knows his wife’s name. John had 2 sons and 3 daughters.  The names of his daughters are also unknown. His sons John and Peter married two sisters Margaret and Martha Ascah.

John Jr.’s children were Christianna, Richard, Charles, and Margaret Harriet from his first wife Margaret Ascah. She died in 1793. John Jr. remarried in 1795 to Margaret McPherson. They had John, Daniel, Laughlin Thomas, Julia Anne, and Mary.

Peter’s children were Hannah, John, Anne Nancy, Margaret, Sarah, Richard, Christianna, James, and Thomas.  His wife’s name was Martha Ascah.

The records I have on John Paterson are the following, “The census of "gaspez" (1765) indicates that John Paterson had a wife, and 4 dependents, all under the age of 16.  He was listed as having 1 boy and 3 girls living in his household.” “The census of Gaspe (1777) lists his dependents as 2 males under 16 and 1 female over 16.”
