EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming) is alleged to be an effective treatment for PTSD, and people often ask me if I practise it.
I don't, and here's why:
- The US National Center for PTSD "unanimously" recognizes the techniques of cognitive behavioural therapy (not EMDR) as the most effective treatment for PTSD.
- An international panel of experts found EMDR to be "possibly" discredited, with a substantial number of those experts finding it "probably" or "certainly" discredited.
- Its practitioners often make unrealistic claims about its effectiveness, even (in some cases) claiming it can cure PTSD in one to three sessions.
