In May 2001, Red Deer County Council adopted a New Community Services Philosophy:

"The County shall continue to provide recreation and community services through enabling and supporting viable County created or County recognized agencies rather than through a direct service delivery role."

The County covers an area of 4,042 square kilometres (1,575 square miles). In all, there are 60 residential subdivisions, eight industrial/commercial subdivisions, four towns, two villages, two summer villages, seven hamlets and eight trailer parks within the County's boundaries.

With a yearly average of 2,133 hours of sunshine, and annual snowfalls of 1,150 millimetres (45 inches), the Red Deer County has a wide climactic range.
