Our
family tree can be traced back in one consecutive
line to 1590, to Jan van Kauwen, the last name was spelled differently
then compared to the modern spelling. However, that original
name still survives in the Netherlands and has its own diverse
members.
In fact the last name has changed a number
of times, most likely due to simple misspellings by local registrars
in the town records at times of birth, marriage and death.
|
The name actually can be traced
back in spurts to the late 13th century, it appears in various
land titles, and church and town records. Unfortunately,
we have not yet found a direct connection to link
the trees.

|
The
current spelling, or I should
say the spelling of my last name was first noticed in
the record books dating back to 1792, at the marriage of Alardius
"Aldard" van Kouwen. His sons would be
the first to carry on
the new spelling
directly to my current part of the family tree.
|
Many
different spellings of the name have included,
-
van Kauwen -
van Couwen
- van Kouwen - van
Cauwen - van
Kaauwen -
So
if your name is or at one time was spelled this way or you have
an ancestor who had a name similar to this please let me know
because you never know we could be related
