Georgia
May 6-9
We spent 2 days exploring in Northeast Georgia. We visited a Civil war fort (Fort Pulaski)
and the historic district of Savannah. It has been 90+ and we are a little
wilted and a bit browner than when we left home. Georgia

We visited the Chickamauga
/ Chattanooga National
Military Park, it is the site (battlefield) of a large and critical US
Civil War encounter between the Confederate and Union Armies. The park contains various monuments,
placards in remembrance of this battle and those who lost their lives
here. The museum is very nice and
details the conditions the let up to the Civil War and how it played out. We then visited the Jack Daniels Distillery
in Lynchburg, nice tour but no
samples.

What screams Kentucky
more than a visit to Churchill Downs to see the location of the Kentucky Derby
(well actually Colonel Saunders gravesite but we skipped that). Also had a tour
through the GM Corvette assembly plant and Corvette
Museum in Bowling Green, and took a 4 hour
hike through Mammoth caves. We have enjoyed Bar-B-Que,
buttermilk pie, fried corn-on-the-cob, red beans & rice, mint juleps and
sweet tea…. Our waistlines continue to
expand.

North Carolina
May 17-25
Spent a day visiting the Biltmore – it was built by George
Vanderbilt in 1895 and is the biggest house in North America with 250+ rooms
and 80,000+ acres of parkland. Then
spent 3 days driving and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains
and Great Smoky Mountains National
Park --- this helped to wear off a bit of the
good food from Kentucky, but we
did develop a taste for Virginia
smoked cured ham. Spent a fun weekend visiting with Shauna’s cousin Brian and
his family in Hickory, N.C., weather conditions are SH (“stinking hot” as Aldo
likes to call it). North Carolina

Aldo’s Mom and Sister from Calgary
spent a week visiting with us in Charleston, S.C.
We toured the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, did a walking tour of the
historic district, and spent time on the local beaches. The weather was ~37 C
each day, so we didn’t move too fast. South Carolina
