What does Parent Participation mean?

In effect, parents “own” the preschool. Parents help in the classroom, assume responsibilities in the day-to-day

operation of the school, attend monthly education and business meetings and vote on key aspects of operation.

Why should I choose a Parent Participation Preschool?

It’s an great opportunity to be involved in your child’s first school experience. You see your child at play and can

get support from our experienced early childhood educator and other parents. Many life-long friendships have

begun at the school for both you and your child though this time at preschool. The first years in the education

system are so very important to your child and you will be rewarded in a number of ways through your

     involvement.

What are the advantages of a Parent Participation Preschool (PPP)?

  • Parents are welcome in the classroom and may participate in the program for as long as it takes for your child to be comfortable and ready to separate from you.

  • The ratio of adults to children in a PPP is far better than in any other educational situation you will meet in your child's entire school career.

  • The support of each family in their quest to find out what is best in and for their child is unequalled in any other situation.

  • The opportunity for your own development and education as a parent is one you should not miss. It is a very rewarding experience.

  • And lastly, and most important of all…participating and sharing is fun! Come and join us!

What makes Rainbow Preschool a special place?

  • Caring and experienced teacher

  • Small class sizes

  • Large and bright classroom

  • Well – equipped equipments and toys

  • Optimal learning environment for children to explore

  • Fun and educational curriculum

  • Friendly environment for parents and children

What happens if I do not or cannot participate?

Rainbow is a Parent Participation Preschool.  That means everyone’s participation is must in order to evenly

distribute the workload needed to run a quality preschool.

Are there meetings?

Yes.  According to regulations (CPPP, and the Society Act), preschool needs to have general meeting once a

month to meet the membership requirements.  Preschool usually combines General meeting with Parent

      Education.

It’s important for the Executives to use this time communicating and discussing important information or events.

Teacher uses this time to address your concerns, children’s program and progress. To keep up what is

happeningin the Preschool, we encourage parents to attend this monthly meeting.

How much time is involved in participating in a PPP?

  • 1 to 2 duty mornings each month.

  • 1 evening meeting each month including both a general meeting and 1½ hours of parent education.

  • An ongoing job, fundraising and advertising which you will do all year.

What is the Parent Education Program?

Preschool invites various speakers to have workshops for preschool parents.  Parent Education can be different

year to year.  Topics are usually about children where parents can improve their parenting skills e.g. nutrition,

health, discipline, behaviour issues.  All the Parent Educations are free of charge for preschool parents, friends

      and relatives.

We try to arrange these Parent Educations as informative, fun and enjoyable as possible.  It is a great opportunity

for parents to socialize and exchange their life stories!

Why do parents need to attend Parent Education program every month?

In order to have parents act as volunteer "assistant teacher" in classroom for duty days, the Council of

Parent Participation Preschools and the Community Care Facilities Licensing require parent education to

be fulfilled monthly.  If parents miss any Parent Education, they must "make-up" Parent Ed by reading materials

suggested from Parent Education Coordinator or the Teacher.  It is extremely important to follow this regulation in

     order to keep our license.

When are the fees due?

The non-refundable registration fee is due with the application form. Once received, this will confirm

your child's spot for September and will be applied to the annual registration fee and tuition. After enrollment of

your child, you will be required to pay monthly fees with a series of post-dated cheques that are made out to

RAINBOW PRESCHOOL to cover the full preschool year. Any payments received after the due date (7th day

of each month) will be charged an additional $10 late fee for each month that payment is late.

A $20 fee will be charged for a returned cheque.  Preschool will have the option to refuse further payment by

     cheque.

What other financial commitment is required?

Each family is required to participate in the school's fundraising activities. A variety of fundraising activities (e.g.

cookie sales, Pub Nights, raffle tickets, etc.) occur throughout the preschool year so that there is something for

     everyone to become involved in.

How often do parents do duty days?

You will have duty day about twice a month.

What do I do on duty day?

The teacher directs all the children's activities. You are there to help supervise and encourage the children. The

parents and the teacher share the practical running of the classroom.

What if I have a younger child?

Younger siblings are not permitted in the classroom while you are on duty. This is a special time for you

and your preschooler. Since many other PPP parents are in the same position, parents often find it easy to

     exchange babysitting on duty days.

Is there any flexibility as to when I am on duty?

Yes. A schedule is made for each upcoming month and you are welcome to indicate days you are unavailable due

to work or childcare needs. Also, parents can exchange duty days to benefit each other.

How is it decided what my job will be?

Parents have their own special interest. We ask parents to fill out a volunteer job sheet to indicate their 1st, 2nd,

     and 3rd choices.

What kind of guidelines is there for doing each job properly?

Our preschool president and teacher will guide you throughout the school year.  You can always refer to our job

description sheet in the registration package.

How much learning is there for the children?

Our philosophy is play-based learning. We provide children with opportunities to explore and challenge their

capabilities in all four areas of development, physical, social, emotional and intellectual.  Nurturing self-esteem and

establishing acceptable behavioural and social skills are an integral part of this philosophy.

What will my child gain from being at Preschool?

·        to feel comfortable away from Mom and Dad

·        to interact with friends

·        to use our bodies effectively

·        to use our manners

·        to satisfy our curiosities

·        to express self-confidence and independence

·        to get along with others and share

·        to cope with our feelings

·        to solve problems

·        to express ourselves

·        to feel good about ourselves

·        to develop our alphabets, numbers, colors and shapes skills.

Can we come to preschool with my child?

Of Course!! Parents, grandparents and guardians are more than welcome to visit anytime.

Will my child be safe?

That's most important job for our teacher! She can see children no matter what play area they are in. She'll help

the children talk about their feelings and get along with friends.

My child is not yet potty trained.

It would be preferable that all the children at the preschool are out of diapers, but this is an unrealistic

expectation.  Please talk with the teacher in order to reach a comfortable arrangement for you and your child.

My child gets very upset when I have to leave him/her.

Some children have a difficult time separating from their parents. At Rainbow Preschool, we introduce

your child to school through a gradual entry process.

  • On the first visit of school, you will have a 15 min visit with just the teacher, you and your child. This visit gives the teacher an opportunity to ask you and your child some questions and get to know him/her better and also gives your child a chance to get better acquainted with the teacher.

  • For the first day of school, your child will attend for one hour; you are encouraged to stay throughout these sessions until your child begins to feel more comfortable.

  • The second day, your child will attend for one and half hour.

  • The third day, your child will attend the full preschool class and the following week normal class time begins.

Most children will start to become familiar with the preschool and feel more comfortable with you leaving.

However, parent will be called to return to the preschool if their child is really anxious.
