Learning French in Camrose

In September 2004 the Battle River School Division started a French immersion program at École Sifton School in Camrose, offering Maternelle (Kindergarten) and Grade 1. As of the 2007-2008 school year the program has grown to include Maternelle to Grade 4. CPF Camrose is actively promoting this French immersion program.

The Camrose chapter of CPF was established in the Fall of 2004, and has been working with École Sifton School, French immersion families, and the community to ensure a successful beginning to French immersion in our community and to provide ongoing support and enrichment as the program grows. French for Immersion Parents courses are planned and implemented as requested (Level I has run twice, and we can also now offer Level II). These courses are reported to be great fun and extremely valuable! If you are interested please contact us at cpfcamrose@yahoo.ca.

Groupe de jeu Amuson-nous en Français (French is Fun Playgroup) has run for several years and is planned to start up again in 2008. Stay tuned…If interested contact  cpfcamrose@yahoo.ca.

Recent CPF Camrose Activities

Fun Nights French Family Fun Nights are becoming a regular fixture of our CPF calendar, often running once a month. Our FFFNs provide an opportunity for parents, children, teachers, and community members to get acquainted. A wide range of activities are planned for each event, and include things like popcorn and a brief "show" at le cinéma, active games in the gym, face painting, board games, crafts or story time. We have also had surprise visits from guests such as Père Noël, and special themes for holidays such as St Valentin and St Patrick. These evenings are for all family members, with French spoken as abilities allow.

Carnaval Another CPF Camrose tradition has been our participation in Family Day activities at Mirror Lake. Held in the spirit of the Quebec winter festival, Le Carnaval, we typically have a lot of fun with plank races, building with coloured ice blocks, and making la tire (maple syrup taffy) at our own makeshift cabane à sucre (maple sugar shack). An appearance is usually made by Bonhomme, the friendly snowman mascot of Carnaval. Family Day activities were not held this year, as the partner organization did not participate, but we expect to be back at it next February!

Tutoring/Reading Club CPF Camrose is always looking for ways to support our FI students. In 2006, we began a tutor list, helping to match students and families seeking help with interested French-speakers in the community. For a list of available tutors, contact us at cpfcamrose@yahoo.caThe Reading Club (Club de lecture) began in the Spring of 2007, and has carried on throughout the 2007-2008 school year. We meet twice monthly in the school library for an hour after school on Wednesdays, and kids can read aloud to each other, do activity pages, or just curl up with a good book.
