The Inner Sanctum

Sanctimony: pretentiousness, sententiousness, tendentiousness, piousness, smugness, blarney, smarminess, condescension, self-righteousness, etc.

Not a fun country, unless you can watch it from the outside, as great practitioners inflict it on each other, for example an exchange among Salman Rushdie, John LeCarre and Christopher Hitchens reported in Harper's Magazine, or, closer to home, a marvellous free-for-all with Subhuti and his fans and detractors recently in the Letters dept of Viha Connection.

Funny thing about sanctimony: it's always someone else.

I should talk.
