Songs in the Key of Osho
~ The Ranch Songbook ~

As mentioned on the Home page, no such animal as The Ranch Songbook actually ever existed, but at festivals at the Oregon Ranch, programmes were handed out with words to the songs that were going to be sung in darshan/satsang. Para has sent scans of four of these programmes. Many of the songs are words-only but for a goodly number the melody will be indicated in a unique way described below.

These programmes had nine or ten shortish, simple songs, to be sung over and over. This presentation enabled even those who didn't know English or the songs to join in, so that there would be as many as ten thousand voices singing them together.

Until the arrival of the Osho Music Archive on Rudra's beautiful Sannyas Wiki site, no record existed of the melodies of many of these songs, save on Ranch-era and earlier audiotapes – remember audiotapes? – but Para employed at the time a simple melody format for some of them, writing letters (a to g) for the notes, one for each syllable of the words. For ease of writing, this system took the liberty of transposing the songs to simple keys, as indeed have i in my own efforts, since God has invented the capo for easy transposition back to any other key for ease of singing. This system has been slightly augmented in ways explained on the pages for each celebration. The system, such as it is, is fairly natural and intuitive, so even if you can't find the tune in the Archive, you'll likely get it if you play with it.

Below is a list of all the songs compiled from these programmes. They are presented in the groups they came in, ie associated with their original celebration days. The first batch actually had none of her notes but i did a few based on my own knowledge of the songs and she added a couple from memory, as well as correcting my mistakes. I may eventually do this for all the songs i originally compiled (that i can still remember :-))

Though much of this collection has been rendered redundant by the appearance of the Archive, there are gaps, and it has been pointed out that the words in the audio may not all be decipherable, especially for ESL types. As well, it may aid as a search function to find those songs, so i will continue to present songs in this format, with a link on each page to the Archived audio (digitalized tape) of that celebration.
