What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do today is a modernized, old Korean art of self-defense. Translated roughly, Tae Kwon Do means "the art of spirit of hand and foot". However, the physical advantage of Tae Kwon Do lies in its incomparable kicking, striking and blocking techniques. More generally, it is a philosophy of self control, kindness and humility to accompany the physical grace and power of fighting skills.

Character Development

For over two thousand years, the martial arts have been used to teach respect towards oneself and others. This respect is the cornerstone towards the development of a child's (or adult's) discipline and character. The mind rules the body, and before a student learning Tae Kwon Do can perform to their fullest potential, they must learn to control the mind. Self respect and parental respect are natural outgrowths of Tae Kwon Do training.

Self Defense

Self defense has become more and more important in recent years. Everyone has the power and ability to fight in self defense, but few truly understand how to use it. People think of themselves as weak because they do not know how to use their strength.

The goal of Tae Kwon Do is to make the individual aware of natural strengths and how to apply them to the greatest advantage. They many powerful and graceful movements of Tae Kwon Do will enable a person to defend his/herself by using any part of the body, with the brain in total control. A person, therefore, will develop self confidence because of the power and ability that has been mastered. This self confidence can be carried over to all aspects of life.

Physical Fitness

In Tae Kwon Do every part of the body is used. A person learns many ways to kick, punch, block, bend and move. With using these techniques, all muscles are tones while you practice in class. Proper breathing techniques are stressed as part of the form or poomse practice. The poomse involve the smooth transition from one position to another, from defense to offense and back again. With all these different workouts and stretching your body will have no choice but be healthier and trimmer.
