The tune is, well, the obvious one.
Like some other things I wrote in their original form in the nineteen-sixties, this has gender-specific language that I would find difficult to change.
Silent night,
Longest night --
Yet our star still shines bright;
Though cold skies hold Earth's North dark in sleep,
Soon the Spring-tide of life back will sweep:
Joy -- the Sun is returning!
Wait now, assured, by the light.
Silent night,
Ancient night;
Dark of space, glittered white --
Suns unnumbered, their reach beyond ken,
Breeding, warming the brothers of men:
Has one guessed at this moment
Who sees our yellow star's light?
Silent night,
Peaceful night:
Gifts that wait for our sight
Crack the walls that hold men's minds apart,
Breathe the dream that man keeps in his heart --
"Leave them open forever!"
Hope, then, at least for this night.
