Workshops We Offer
QUILT WORKSHOP OFFERINGS:

The workshops I offer are primarily ‘process’ oriented rather than ‘product’ oriented. In other words, I usually teach people how to DO something rather than how to MAKE a certain something.

RAW EDGE APPLIQUÉ:
A ONE-DAY course designed for people interested in trying this popular and fun technique. Students will work on a design of their own creation, with input from the instructor if desired. Prior experience in art quilts, however, is not required. Students must be able to finish the quilt on their own.

BEGINNING FREE MOTION QUILTING:
A ONE-DAY course is designed for students interested in learning free motion quilting techniques. The instructor leads the class through a variety of activities starting from very simple and ending with free motion stippling and stitch in the ditch. This is a class to learn the techniques necessary for the students to later complete quilts on their own.

INTRODUCTION TO ORIGINAL WORK IN QUILTING (ART QUILTS 101):
This THREE-DAY course is designed for students just beginning to do original design in their quilts. No prior art quilt experience is required, however more experienced students are very welcome. The instructor leads the students through a variety of experiences designed to generate ideas for quilts and develop techniques for executing them. There is a very small amount of homework between sessions. This course has been taught two different ways – three days in a row and three days each 2 weeks apart. There is a $30 supply fee that includes some embellishment materials and a manual of course material.

BASIC EMBELLISHMENT TECHNIQUES:
These are ONE-DAY courses that include a variety of embellishment techniques. Techniques include adding colour to the fabric in a multitude of ways and adding a variety of beads, buttons, appliqués, etc. The instructor has enough techniques available to teach five completely different days and input from the registered students can be used to select the actual activities taught, or the instructor can make the determination. There is a $15 supply fee.

POSTCARDS:
Creating small works of art that can actually be sent through the mail is one of the hot new items in the quilting world. This ONE-DAY workshop will teach the student how to create these mini art pieces. Students will have the time to make more than one during the day. Mailing them later is optional.

ARTIST TRADING CARDS:
Artists in a variety of media are currently creating these tiny works of art and trading them with other artists. Artist Trading Card groups have formed in many communities where folks can get together and trade cards made of fabric, metal, glass, pottery, etc., etc. This ONE-DAY course will teach the student how to make these cards in fabric. Students will have the time to complete several ATCs during the day.

FABRIC DYEING AND DISCHARGING:
Hand dyeing fabric remains a popular activity with quilters. The colours are luscious and the opportunity to create original fabric is very compelling. This ONE-DAY course will teach the students a variety of techniques including gradations, multi-colour pieces, and colour discharging. There is a $15 supply fee.

CURVED TOPSTITCH PIECING:
Curved topstitch piecing is a technique to create beautiful flowing curves in your work without having raw edges and without piecing seams. In this ONE-DAY class, the students will work with an abstract design supplied by the instructor to learn the technique. Sewing machines MUST have zigzag capabilities. Students must be able to finish the quilt on their own.

(New courses are always being developed and Trish can develop workshops based on students’ needs.

Trish can be reached at the above address, phone number and email. Instructor’s fees are $200 per day plus costs of travel, etc. Trish’s classes are known for being positive, supportive, and loads of fun. She encourages each student to do their best and discourages competition between students and as she frequently reminds students – she is not the Quilt Police. Further information on courses and instructor availability can be obtained by contacting the instructor directly.

Artist Statement
TRISH ANN WHITE

I engage in artistic pursuits because I must. It is part of my very soul to express myself creatively. It has ever been thus.

I quilt because it is fun. I am happy when I work with colour and fabric. Certainly, some of my themes have darker tones and express my sorrow and rage at what occurs in the world around me. But mostly I quilt because it is fun. I love playing with bright colours and whimsical themes to express my joy and light-heartedness.

I hope you enjoy viewing or owning my quilts as much as I have had in making them.
