Body Mass Index, Energy &
Macronutrient Calculations:
To calculate BMI use the following: Wt in kg/ (ht in m x ht in m) (lbs divide by 2.205 = kg; inches x 2.54 = cm) for example: 5'-3" (63"), 180 lbs 160 cm, 81.6 kg 81.6/ (1.6 x 1.6) BMI = 81.6/2.56 = 31.9 Estimate of energy requirements: For women & men age 19 -74, estimated energy requirements are 29 - 42 kcal/ kg. As a guideline, use 30 kcal/ kg for inactive; 35 kcal/kg for moderate to high activity; 40 kcal/ kg for high activity. Macronutrient Calculations: Carbohydrate - 1 gram of carbohydrate provides 4 calories of energy 55% of total calories in the diet for example: 2000 kcal x 55% = 1100 kcal 4 kcal/gram = 1100/4 = 275 grams/day Protein - 1 gram of protein provides 4 calories of energy 15% of total calories for example: 2000 kcal x 15% = 300 kcal 4 kcal/gram = 300/4 = 75 grams/day Fat - 1 gram of fat provides 9 calories of energy 30% of total calories for example: 2000 kcal x 30% = 600 kcal 9 kcal/ gram = 600/9 = 67 grams/day

HEALTH ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA |

Health is a state of balance between the body, mind and consciousness. Food is medicine and restores health: Aside from moral implications of eating meat, (Yogi Bhajan playfully states: "Vegetarians don't eat anything that had a mother."), let's consider meat eating strictly from a health point of view. Meats are a concentrated animal protein. When an animal dies, its protein coagulate within a few hours. They undergo a process called autoputrefaction in which the original substance begins to break down and decay, releasing various toxins. When meat is eaten, it cannot be completely broken down in the upper digestive tract, and so the process of decay and release of toxins continues in the colon. These toxins can initially be absorbed by the liver, but eventually even the liver can't handle them, and the body becomes polluted. Vegetable proteins, by comparison, do not undergo autoputrefaction. Their main residue is cellulose, which is inert. Meat is amoung the most acid producing foods. It leaves a residue of uric acid in the bloodstream. Acidic blood is an ideal environment for the development of cancer. Uric acid is a toxin that makes it harder to reach the higher, clearer meditative states because it is an irritant in the bloodstream. Meat is also amoung the greatest sources of cholesterol, which contributes to heart disease, hardening of the arteries, and senility. Most animals which are raised for their meat today are fed a variety of chemicals and hormones to make them grow faster and bigger. Meat takes three days to pass through the human system. For optimum health, men need to digest food within 24 hours; women within eighteen hours. (Bhajan, 2005, p. 253) Bibliography Bhajan, Y. (2005).
