Beej's review: Every so often,
I like to pop this CD in and let it play in the background. Other
than being a great reminder of the R Movie (which I really should watch
again . . .), it makes great BGM on it's own. As cruisin' music or
just to do linear algebra by, it's quite relaxing and never intrusive (until
it hits the senshi henshin themes ^_^). BTW, I'm only going to highlight
certain instrumental passages that are important in my review, as the entire
CD is played by the Moonlight Symphony Orchestra. Also, the fact
that much of the BGM is lumped together makes it difficult to give my impressions
on each piece, so please bear with my style of reviewing them.
-
Prologue - one of my
first Sailor Moon MP3s. ^_^ It's very gentle and laid-back,
and there's a great melody too. The choir just makes you want to
sing along - "Oooohooohh, Sailor Moo-oon . . .".
-
Moon Revenge - unbelievably
kick-ass song! If you don't know this song, then I recommend you
listen to it immediately! Each of the five seiyuu take a turn doing
a verse, then all five join in on the chorus. Great bass and a fast
beat make it motivational and inspiring (no kidding!). An excellent
track.
-
Akai Kami no Shounen
- Using only a oboe, guitar, bass, and sparse bongo drums, this track conveys
a relaxed atmosphere. My only complaint? It's a little short.
Part 2 of this BGM is quite mysterious and eerie, building quickly to a
climax and then settling back down to some gentle BGM, featuring the oboe.
-
Shokubutsuen no Happening!
- a swinging, whimsical song, with the violin playing the melody, then
being replaced by a choir "Ooh"-ing. Gradually, the song gets more
urgent, until the "drop-off" release. Part 2 is quite relaxed, featuring
a nice legato melody on piano, backed up by a classical guitar. Then
a violin takes the melody, while the rest of the orchestra swells and ebbs
behind it . . . Then suddenly, we're back to the urgent "happening" part
of the BGM swelling quickly, and ending abruptly.
-
Hana Youma Gurishina
- another mysterious track that slowly builds and builds, until it erupts
in a rock beat with guitar, keyboard, and strings all playing an "enemy
attack" theme. Stopping for a brief moment, only a single note on
the violin can be heard. Then it's back to more of the enemy attacking
- this time, utilizing most of the orchestra for the melody and harmony.
-
Make Up! - the Senshi
henshin themes! Much the same as they were in the series (disco beat
and all), but this time with vocalists singing the name of the current
senshi.
-
Moeru Bishoujo Senshi
- first, it starts with the BGM played when SM does her speech. Then,
we launch into an extended attack theme for SM, with vocalists "ooh"-ing
again. After a tense moment, it lapses into the same kind of BGM
as in the first part of Akai Kami no Shounen.
-
Tuxedo Kamen Toujou - Mamoru to
Fiore - BTW, that means "Tuxedo Kamen Appears - Mamoru and Fiore",
so it's obviously the Tuxedo Kamen Appearence theme. Then it launches
into a fast beat, with a solo electric guitar and shots from the brass
section. Following that, there is a slow piece featuring the piano,
with the strings section playing harmony, that exemplifies the feeling
of longing.
-
Sailor Teleport! - the
Sailor Teleport theme! With all the majestic fanfare of something
amazing that is about to happen! Following that is another mysterious
BGM, that is also oddly majestic in it's own way. Then it heads into
a full-out battle BGM, with a solo on the electric guitar, getting a little
faster each time.
-
Tsuisou no Fiore - starting
out very ominous and majestic (those choir singers ^_^), it turns into
a sad, slow BGM with the bassoon (or bass clarinet) playing little interjections
here and there. Then it turns into a faster "evil villian" piece,
with the strings playing the meldoy and harmony. Soon the flutes
join them, then the brass, building to a climax and then ending abuptly.
Oddly enough, this is followed by another piece like Akai Kami no Shounen,
except it's longer than before, with more artistic liberty taken by the
oboe.
-
Hana Meiro no Shitou
- this begins quite ominously and feels like a final battle BGM, what with
the brass playing shots everywhere. Then it turns into a Sailor Moon
attack theme, much longer than before. Keeping the beat the same,
it moves into a funky battle BGM, with a little solo by the electric guitar.
-
Gekitotsu! Sailor Moon VS Fiore
- And again, there's a piece that sounds like Akai Kami no Shounen.
I hope you like oboe . . . but soon, that moves into a little ominous piece,
featuring the electric guitar again, which relates a feeling of helplessness.
A choir comes in to sing another majestic oration, and the mood drops down
to sadness again, with a slow sonata by the piano. Soon, the strings
come in, and we move into another slow piece à la Akai Kami no Shounen.
-
Seimei Moyashite - It
begins as a slow copy of that battle song which appeared earlier on the
CD, but then moves into a slow BGM on the violins. Most of this track
is made up of feelings from other tracks. Then it's back into the
short, fast battle BGM again, before moving on to a very laid-back
track from Akai Kami no Shounen.
-
Fukkatsu no Serenade
- this should be instantly recognizable to anyone - it's Moon Revenge on
piano and strings, followed by a little harmonizing by the vocalists.
-
I Am Sailor Moon - I
affectionately dubbed this track the "funk" version of the original track
(available on "Mirai he Mukatte") because that's
what it basically is. Using a synth bass and a different drum kit
gives this it's own distinct feel. The violins and brass are still
in there, but the feel is different somehow. I, along with some other
nitpickers, have heard Mitsuishi Kotono's vocals go a little flat in spots,
but it's not very detectable unless you're a musician or you listen to
a LOT of music.
