i have got some amazing results, real air, top end, transients from
reasonably inexpensive RESLO ( the 30/50 ohm units only ) and RCA 74b.
( which is a pretty nasal sounding PA grade mic, compared to the upper end models
i have even done a RCA VARACOUSTIC, which has the smallest ribbon of any i know of.
i use super thin ribbon, cray supercomputer silver/teflon wire, etc.
ALL MY MODULES ARE FULLY REALIZED ..ALL FUNCTIONS TESTED
RECAPPED,,MODDED( where applicable )and then RETESTED,

SOME OF THE ADM gear fixes up VERY NICELY.
SOME have VERY high end discrete op amps, *N1202,
that are as nice as API or JENSEN ( HArdy era) transistor gain blocks.
the stock units have all sorts of other crap in the signal path, though.
they NEED TO BE MODDED to realize modern high end performance

its is a fairly extensive mod, worth $125 for a mono levelar,
more for the pro or stereo versions, obviously.
they end up as VERY VERY TRANSPARENT for reasonable,
non EFFECT type compression. worth every penny.
I have, for example, directly compared them with the UNIVERSAL AUDIO
powered plugins, and they are as clear, and nice sounding.
they are DIFFERANT from EACH OTHER, however. the best one, for VOICE, to me,
is the lowly LEVELAR mono unit,but the PRO unit is more flexable.
i also change the LIMITER setting to a more musical 4:1..i found
the stock 6:1 produced artifacts, without having more control over
attack/release settings

i have decided i am NOT selling the mod info itself,
these are physically difficult units for a lay person
to work with, due to the plate through boards, and
finicky nature of the ribbon connectors internally.
if you havent worked with these before, you will
no doubt find em a HUGE pain in the ass...its hard
to remove things, even with solder wick.
REALLY, you need a commercial desoldering unit, to do it easily.../

*note: after much research, I found that the KILLER CIRCUIT
is the one with the EF86 front end, and the EQ network to be on the FEEDBACK,
After the speaker, not before the input.
The differance between the circuits is AMAZING...
you find the good circuit on some of the earliest amps,
and DEFINATELY after the 622, into the 2000 series.
this amp is my all time favorite acoustic guitar
amp, and VOCAL live pa amp, if you can live with 20 watts.
i sometimes put up 4 of them, or one per performer,
physically placing them BEHIND each person, making the performer
a blind for the mic they are using...the sound appears to come from
the PERFORMER themselves, only LOUDER..and you can use great sounding mics..
as long as you remember to turn them DOWN when the performer isnt between the
speaker and the mic...
they have a detail, and tonal quality that NO powered monitor these days can touch.
they have a special JBL speaker , and internal active EQ to extend the frequency range,
and some interesting compression.
This circuit carried on into the later models as well..
they tried differant porting, and even a tweeter in the later models.
i found that the PORT was a good idea, it helped tame some handle rattles.
but ANY of these units, port or no, sound great to me..
they are pretty easy to fix up..and its possible to change the circuit to the good one
but its a bit more work than simply upgrading caps, etc..
if you have any of these that want to find a good home, let me know.
i was recently able to aquire some new info, which has the design
philosphy and circuit ideas of the designers..as well as the usual sales blurbs...

I HAVE JUST FINISHED figuring out my mods to the RP583 compressor,
and comparing it to ART VLA PRO and LEVELAR modified units.
i think the BELLARI is the clear winner, because of several factors.
the CHIPS are allready socketed, so mod easily. the CAPS in the signal path
are allready polyprop, for the TUBE path.
and the topography allows for some important options.. attack and release controls
are excellent, i like the VUE GR metering, and if yougo in the UNBALANCED input,
you go right into the tube stages, run at high voltage, direct.
i take the OUTPUT from the tube stages, and split it into a TRANSFORMER balanced output,
and also upgrade the OP AMP unbalanced output, so you have the choice of sound types.
i also recently aquired a large amount of REALLY nice knobs from hafler surplus,
which make the finished unit look like a rEQUISITE compressor..and add to the " FEEL "
Depending on TRANSFORMER type, and TUBE type, and how large you make the input cap
to the TUBE stage, you can get a large range of voicing options with this unit.
all in all, my new favorite upgraded compressor.

engineers..they are NOT ALL THE SAME, some models are among the finest
analog recording equipment ever built...

THIS IS, in my opinion, some of the best VINTAGE recording equipment
EVER MADE! used by MOTOWN, CAPITOL, UNITED, WARNER, the MGM GRAND, etc etc

I use these as the heart of my studio..they have over TWICE ! the
headroom of NEVE (+/-28volt power supply) and use various generations
of discrete class A amps, including DEANE JENSEN's 990 discrete op amp.
there is ONE CAP in the signal path,per gain stage,ROOM FOR POLYPROPALINE
and where a NEVE would have 5 gain stages from end to end, these can have TWO!
Its worth noting, that the TOP analog gear on todays market uses HIGH VOLTAGE rails,
Avalon, Millennia, Great river, GML, Martech, Crane song,and of course all the tube stuff.
True, the eq's only have 12db+/-, but its ALL totally musical....

I somtimes have mic pre, eq, graphics for sale, in limited quantities..
at prices that make VERY GOOD sense, compared with ( avalon, millennia, gml, great river, etc)
when these units are recapped, signal path caps speeded up with polyprop, they
compare favourably to the best current high end analog..better by a ways,
in my opinion, than most vintage. i use a lot of it, in my own studios.
when you ACTUALLY check out american audio history, you will find QUAD 8,
more often than not, in the VERY TOP STUDIOS...ESPECIALLY for FILM.
Neve , API, Trident, etc are excellent, for sure, but you would be suprized if you listen to Q8..

I started using RODE mics long time agon, when they
first came out with the NT2...they are EXCELLENT mics,
and NOW, with the new models, represent the best real value
in tube mics, in my opinion..there is a HUGE differance
between the CHEAP chinese condensers, and the RODE models..
i have worked with RODE, and know the circuits inside thier mics,
and while i cannot disclose them, i can say they are WORLDS above
the power supplies, and components used in many VERY expensive
vintage classics.
They also manage to VOICE the mics to have a SIMILAR signature,
across the product line, even though from an ELECTRONIC standpoint,
the models represent MANY differant advance designs, and this is NOT
an easy thing to do.
this is where we differ in opinion, i would , instead, concentrate on
exploiting and expanding on DIFFERANCES between designs...in fact, my
mods for rode mics involve this ..and updating for performance, in general
WHERE POSSIBLE, at all. THey are pretty much stateof the art, in build
quality, power supply design, capsules are amazing...buttt...
my MAIN referance mics are a pair of CLASSIC TWO, which have the wonderfull
remote pattern switching, which gives possibilities that you simply have
to hear to appreciate. I must ADD though, that i DIFFER in opinion
with RODE about some transformer and component choices, because i
have heard things they havent, as yet. I changed the transformer on my
classic TWO, for the one i have custom wound for me, and use on my mic pre
kit, tube headphone amps, etc..and the differance is simply NOT TO BE BELIEVED.
I have compared the result of this with the top models of NEUMANN and BRAUNER,
LAWSON, DPA, TELEFUNKEN, AKG,etc...and they have become my referance standard

They recently sent me an NTK model, which has a solid state output, and 6dj8 FAMILY
of tube..I found it had similar voicing to the classic two, in its stock form, but
had a GLARE, and a lot of compression, that i simply couldnt live with, having
been spoiled by the performance of the admittedly much more expensive classic TWO.
Since there was no transformer to upgrade, i was limited to upgrading the capacitors
that couple the signal path, but the BIGGEST CHANGE was changing the Tube..
I have a good selection of all brands of vintage tubes, in many types, and as there is
no black plate vintage equivelent of the 6dj8, i chose to try to go with revoicing the mic
and found an NOS type which gives INCREDABLE change to the mic...SILKY , featheRy top end,
like some of the finest ribbons in my collection, but with the slight presence boost you get
with condenser capsules, and suprizingly, a HUGE reduction in the compression i was hearing
with the stock mic.
HOwever, my TRANSFORMER mod to the CLASSIC TWO, make it the TOP MIC i have heard, at any price.
its NOT that expensive for me to do, for you..but , sadly, its a one way trip. i cannot always save
the original transformer..so, its a huge leap of faith, unless you can actually COME to my studio, and
hear the differance for yourself. I did extensive audio testing, between the STOCK and MODIFIED unit, and
there is NO comparison.
