Tips on finding parents using the number system:

  • To find the father double the number, add one for the mother.
  • example--
  •  # 17 is Olive Scribner
  •  Double 17 to get her father # 34 Thaddeus Scribner,
  •  add one , so # 35 for her mother, Prudence Morrell.
  • Husbands and fathers are always even numbers--wives and mothers ,odd numbers.
  • Please check the information yourself.  I have not verified everything and there may be mistakes

A wedding of much interest took place July 23rd, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Wood, Southfield, when their daughter, Gladys R. Allaby, was united in marriage to Ivan W. Reid.   The ceremony was performed by the Rev. I. E. Vanwart of Norton.  The bride, who was unattended, looked charming in white silk with bridal veil.  The ceremony took place on the lawn, under an arch prettily decorated with the Union Jack, ferns and roses.   Supper was served to about 50 invited guests.   The young couple received many valuable and useful gifts of furniture, silver and linen.  The bride was a popular school teacher and the groom is a returned soldier, having served two years in France for his King.   We wish them much happiness in their married life.   They will reside in Norton.

Notes for William Torrance Reid:

Obituary:
The death of
William T. Reid which occurred on Wed. of last week, removed one of the most respected citizens of Clintondale. His death was a great shock to all, having been sick but ten days. He was considerably better the night before his death, so that his family entertained hopes of his recovery, but in the morning a change came that took him off suddenly. His parting words were that he had no fear of death.

He will be greatly missed by his family, having been a kind and loving husband and father and will also be greatly missed by the community at large, being associated with them in a business way. He had for ten years been agent at the Clintondale depot and filled his position faithfully and completely. He leaves to mourn  his loss a wife and one child,  an aged mother, a sister and several brothers. The funeral took place at his late residence on Saturday morning. His many friends expressed their sympathy for the bereaved family by sending many beautiful floral pieces. Internment in Lloyd cemetery

Note:  Willie Reid learned telegraphy at Bloomfield Station with Mr. DeWinton. He had a position at Winstead CT before going to Clintondale NY.  We are told he died of typhoid fever.

Allaby-At Salt Springs, N.B., Jan. 13th, 1904
Charles Allaby aged 43 years. Brother Allaby was baptized about 28 years ago, by the Rev. O.N. Keith, and was one of the charter members of the Salt Springs Baptist Church. For years he has been both Deacon and Church Clerk,  fulfilling the duties of both with ability and consecration. He was always present at the stated meeting of the church, was always a source of inspiration to his pastor and always ready to forward the cause of Christ in any way that laid in his power. In his removal from us the little church has sustained a great loss but can rejoice in the fact that one more of its members has joined the ever increasing assembly above. Our departed brother leaves a wife, five small children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. My the God of comfort sustain the sorrowing family in their time of trial.

    Notes for John Budge

John Budge was a policeman.   His sister Christine  Budge married Bernard Flanagan 17 Nov. 1864 at the St. Andrews Church, Saint John

A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants before Confederation  by Donald Whyte  -----"John Budge  1816-1874 from Cai to St. John, NB. The Highlander, 21 Feb 1874"

Obituary:  27 Jan 1874    an inquest was held on John Budge who died at his residence, corner Pitt and Mechlenburg streets Saint John (click for map), yesterday.  He was employed as blacksmith at the water and sewage works Leinster St. He was a city constable before the organization of the present police force. Death was due to heart disease at age 58. Left family of four.

    Was formerly of Caithness, Scot.

Notes:  Catherine Elizabeth Budge married 8 Dec 1880 to Edward J Hayden, Boston.

In the will John Budge states he left a family of four which doesn't include his daughter Christine Budge.  In the 1881 census, Christine  is living with her aunt and uncle, Christine and Bernard Flannigan. A possibility that they adopted her.

From Delia's Story  " Bernard Flanagan's wife was a Budge, I think, Aunt Tine's aunt............He lived with Uncle Charlie and Aunt Tine and then when Uncle Charlie died, he stayed there."

Child of John Budge and Elizabeth Greer---- Christine Henderson Budge

John Budge is a widower in the 1871 census.

     Note:

The only record of Elizabeth Greer is in the family Bible and the record of  Christine’s birth in 1867.
    Birth Registration   :
Christine Henderson Budge, 17 Aug. 1867.... Dr Inches......  Corner Pitt and Mecklenburg, Saint John  [birthplace]  ...

    .father:       John Budge       (Scottish)       Blacksmith;
    mother :
    Elizabeth Greer( Scottish)....

Speculation:  I found an Elizabeth Greer in Stanley Parish in the 1851 census. Not proven that this is the family of the Elizabeth
Greer that was the mother of Christine Budge.

I want to thank Vonda Reid Adams who has been researching all the descendants of James Reid and has published: Foot Prints in Kings County, New Brunswick   The Reid Lines She has shared a wealth of information!

Notes for James Reid and Olive Scribner:

Mickie Coram e-mailed with the following information copied from the Coram family Bible, "James Reid born June 25th 1782,m.1809 Olave Scribner b. Oct 18th 1790. They had 11 children."

Mickie is a descendant of James Reid's daughter, Lilley, and gave me the following information:

Lilley Reid (James Reid's daughter) married John Kimball . John was the owner of the sailing vessel called the Defiance of Saint John.

Children of Lilley Reid and John Kimball are listed as:

    George B.     born 29 June 1840

Olivia Jane    born 13 Feb 1842

Olivia married Peter Mills in 1858 and remarried Joseph McAfee in 1868.

    Lilley              born 20 July 1844

married Joseph LeBaron Coram and moved to the U.S.A.  Their children were Elva, Gwen, Earnest and Joseph McAfee.

Thanks to Mickie Coram for the above information and for the birth date of James Reid.

I  found in The Vital Statistics 1850- 1852 the following:
    9th August 1851 NBC
item 1353   m. 8th inst., by Rev. Robert Irvine/  Alexander
    Campbell / Mrs. Lilly Kimball

From the search and extract records of newspapers in New Brunswick, there is this following item from The Daily Telegraph 25 Feb 1884:
    item 327
" Suddenly, in Portland St. John , on the morning of the 25th inst., Mrs. Lillie Campbell, daughter of the late James Reid, of Aberdeen, Scotland, aged 67 years. Funeral this day (Wednesday) at half past two o'clock, from the residence of her son- in- law, Joseph McAfee, Paradise Row. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend."

I will include item 336  in the same newspaper:
    d. Saint John city ,Saturday morn. 23 inst, of consumption, Joseph J. Reid, age 24, s/o James Reid, formerly of Upham (Kings Co.) 27 February 1884        D.T.
My guess is that James Reid (son of
James Reid b.1782) put the notice of the untimely death of his son and his sister's, Lilley's, death at the same time. Luckily for us he included her father's name and place of birth.

     Notes:
     The census listed
James Reid as entering the colony of NB in 1808.

Thaddeus Scribner in his memorial in 1812 petitioning for land on the Nerepis River says, ".....and James Reid a native of
Scotland his son-in-law, his present residence quite insufficient for the maintenance of his numerous family... "

James Reid was the jailkeeper in Kingston from March 1845 to October 1815.

This from the story of Henry Moore Smith, The Mysterious Stranger by Walter Bates."................................and from the considerable trouble the prisoner was known to have given, I had little hope of finding anyone to take the charge.  However I prevailed with James Reid (a man in whom I could confide) to undertake the charge of him; who , with his family moved into the house the day following.
After this Smith seemed more cheerful, and became rather more quiet, until the 24th of March, when I was called on by the jailer, who informed me that Smith was attempting to break through the partition where the stove pipe passed through to the debtors' room."

In the book, Westfield, a History told by Residents, 1997, by Suzanne Sutton on page 146 is the following:  "Nerepis..... the property between the [Woman's Institute] hall and the Nase land was owned at one time by the Reids and later by the McKenzies.....[It is said that] in 1817 James Reid purchased 1000 acres in this area from John Coffin.  Mr. Reid built the house at 9 Britain Road. The house seems " off the beaten track" today, but in the early 1800's the main road ran past it...... In 1840 James Reid sold the house and 240 acres between Nerepis road and the river  to David McKenzie."

The Reid family moved to a farm in Salt Springs, Upham parish.

Some people have said  that James is the son of Loyalists, James Reid and Sarah Bull. Adelia Campbell gave the following account as told to her by Alexander, James' and Olive's grandson, "Among the three thousand Loyalists who landed in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1783, was the Reid family of Scottish descent. Before leaving New England they had buried their wealth-  even the women's silk dresses, expecting to go back later and get what they had buried. They did after the war was over, but the place was so different that they never found what they had buried and came back disappointed."

There is no doubt James Reid is from Aberdeen and his grandson might have been mixed up with the Scribner or Morrell families that married into the Reid family

    Will of James Reid:

I declare it to be my will and pleasure that my beloved wife Olive be maintained out of my effects during her natural life, as far as they go and state the principal to be as follows:

A posting by Troy in Genforum in reply to a query re: Isaac Allaby and Sophia Wood:

"Sophia's real name was Susannah born 1793

Parents: Joshua Wood born 1773 and Mary (Hopewell?)

    Grandparents: James Wood and Elizabeth

Great grandparents: Stephen Wood of Staten Island, New York

Also from what I have read about Susannah's mother (Mary) was "Mulatto background" and Susannah had a sister named Mary Ester who was also called a mulatto girl at her wedding and married Charles McIntire, a black man.

I found this information in New Brunswick, Canada.

It was in a book called "The Woods of New Brunswick"

I was wondering if you could confirm any of this info because I have a great -great grandfather Stephen Sands who married Susannah's (Sophia) mother Mary."

There is a petition by Mary Sands for a Widow's pension on the NB web site. " I ,Mary Sands of Waterborough in the County of Queens aged sixty years, do swear that in the year 1823 at Waterborough I was lawfully married to Stephen Sands."

Stephen Sands was attached to the Regiment of Queen's Rangers commanded by Colonel Simco[e]. Stephen Sands died in 1830.. The petition is dated 1840.

From the book Norwalk-Being an Historical Account of that Connecticut Town: The Deed Malign........"For his part in the Danbury Raid- joining the  British at Campo Beach and, according to witnesses, looting in Danbury and chopping down the Liberty Pole in Ridgefield- Nehemiah Scribner was tried for high treason and given the death sentence, the only Norwalk Tory to receive so harsh a penalty. Scribner had made a successful getaway with the enemy following the raid but he made the mistake of returning to Norwalk for some clothes and was captured while trying to slip back to Long Island. At his trial Scribner denied he had looted but admitted that he had indeed been persuaded to follow the British. He appealed the sentence, pleading that he not be cut off "in the Bloome of life," and the Assembly commuted the death penalty to an indefinite term in the hellhole Newgate Prison at Simsbury."

The census lists Ann Bolton as entering NB in 1808. Gave origin as Irish.

I found on the LDS Family Search an Ann Bolton born 1788 in Offaly, Ireland. I speculate that this is the Ann Bolton who is listed above.

John Bolton was born c. 1783 in Offaly, Ireland. Could this be the Ann and John Bolton who came to New Brunswick?  John Bolton married Catherine Campbell in 1813.

In First Families in New Brunswick, there is Samuel Bolton b. 1798 in Ireland. He came to NB and settled in Norton Parish, Kings County.

I found a Samuel Bolton on Family Search born in 1798 in Offaly, Ireland.

Andrew Somerville lived on Grand Manan Island for 4 years, then moved to West Scotch Settlement, then to Campbell Settlement (known as Southfield).

newspaper item: 9 Aug. 1887-   Andrew Somerville, who lives about four miles from Hatfield Point, Kings Co., on the Saint John  River[ ?] reached his 100th birthday on the 4th of last month. He was born in Perthshire , Scotland, and today he is enjoying good health and spirits, and can sing a good Scotch song when he wants to.

    newspaper:
Andrew Somerville, in his 103rd year, is still smart and active, and can read the finest print without the aid of glasses.

From the family Bible:  Died in his 105th year.
Springfield, Kings Co., has been called to mourn the loss of its oldest resident, Mr.
Andrew Somerville, who died on the 26th. Deceased was born in Perthshire, Scotland on July 13th,1787 where he lived 29 years. Then in 1816 he and hi s family came to America and settled on Grand Manan Island, where they lived four years. In 1820 he left his island home and moved to West Scotch Settlement, Kings Co, where he purchased a farm and lived the remaining 71 years of his life, and died at the far advanced age of 104 years, five months and 13 days.
Such longevity was never known in Springfield before and it is feared will again.
Mr. Somerville was always a very healthy man and was never affected by disease; yet he became somewhat feeble the last few years of his life. He was very kindly cared for, however, by his son Duncan and family. The aged gentleman left a large circle of relatives and friends, having 11 children (nine of whom survive him), 84 grand-children, 123 great grand-children and four great great grand-children.

Janet Buchanan's sister Katherine married a Smith. Her brothers were brothers James and Donald.  The old homestead of the  Somervilles is at Neville Folkins farm in Stewarton.

Notes for John Lannon and Abigail Baxter:

This is from Parish of Christ Church Norton, New Brunswick by J. E. Hoyt :
" Another curious fact is that all church members and supporters were not of the same persuasion. For example, a son- in -law of
Simon Baxter, John Lannon was a Roman Catholic. He served on the vestry for several years, supported actively and held two prominent box pews until his death. He was a prime mover in the building of the Roman Catholic chapel but died before it was finished. This was situated in the old Roman Catholic cemetery just below Harold Soiree's place. However he had the promise from his brother-in-law, Abraham Baxter, that he would continue the work after his (Lannon's) death. It is said that Abraham wasn't too zealous until he was supposed to have seen Lannon's ghost. He really got busy then and finished the chapel dying shortly after. John Lannon lived on in the farmhouse built in 1791 and was said to have held slaves there."

A petition written by John Lannon in 1817 states:

" That your memorialist is a native of Ireland is subject to the Government of New Brunswick, resides at present at the farm he purchased of Joseph Crafts and others in the parish of Norton, County of Kings this year and has resided for the five years previous in the town of Saint Andrews, Charlotte County is married and has a family and has received no grant or allotment of land from the crown or any part of his Majesty's Dominions."

John Smith was her first husband. No issue, He built the house that still stands.  There is a conflicting story that says Abigail and John had a son, Benjamin.

This info comes from The Bloomfield Area Remembered  compiled by David G. Keirstead:                                                                                                                 The Royal Gazette of Aug 8th 1786 " Caution. Whereas Abigail Smith, the subscriber's wife, has eloped from his bed and board, this is to foreworn all persons from harbouring her, or trusting her on any account, as I will pay no debts of her contracting.

    1832 Newspaper item:

Died  At Norton, on Thursday last, after a severe illness, Mr. John Lannon, aged 66 years.- Mr. L. was a native of Kilkenny Ireland; and during his residence of upwards of twenty years in this province , has, by his strict integrity, and rightness of conduct, gained for himself a name that will cause his memory to be long revered. The neighbourhood in which he resided will also have cause to deplore the loss of a real friend and a zealous promoter of piety and religion. Funeral tomorrow at one o'clock.
John Lannon is buried in RC cemetery between Norton and Bloomfield.
Note from Muriel Tucker and I think the cross has disappeared." Its true name is St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church.  The cross that sits in the center is upon the site of the foundation of the church.  It was a very small church.  If you look closely you can see the outline of the foundation"
    Although
John Lannon didn't leave male heirs , Lannon has been passed down as a first name.
John Lannon was the third husband and the line followed here.

From newspaper: 9 Mar. 1850 Died at residence Norton on 1st  Abigail, widow of John Lannen, age 84.

I found a Barnard Lannon about 1775 on Loger Street, Thomastown, Kilkenny.

On a personal note:  Our family lived next door to this house and I have visited it many times. A story connected with John Smith is that he would sit in the house and have his servants throw water at the windows so he could imagine he was at sea.

"Conversations with Mrs Norman Jost, in April 2004, and her genealogical notes, suggest that Abigail's first husband was Josiah Smith, the son of Captain John Smith. At the time of the marriage Captain Simon Baxter (The Loyalist) gave land on which the home was to be built, While the other parent, Captain John Smith, gave the house. Josiah and Abigail had one son Benjamin ) baptized Nov 4, 1787 at Sussex by Rev Clark of Gagetown; died July 8 , 1858 in Digby,NS. Benjamin was married three times 1 Jane Canby, 2 Eliza Regan Fairchild, 3. Seraphina Wiswald. Abigail's second husband, Martin Fahey was born in Ireland ca 1763. He died in Norton Parish March 17, 1801 and is said to be buried in St. Stephen's Catholic Cemetery. [Note: Art and Julie Hughes found the following when researching the deed to their property. The deed was dated Sept 2, 1795 where Simon Baxter deeded to Abigail Fahey the land on which she was living ( and next to Captain John Smith) 250 acres. Baxter was to erect a house. this was to be passed down to Martin Fahey (he to have a double portion).

I found a history of Sackville on the web with this petition:

Thomas Herritt- In 1809.....he is 56 years of age. His family consists of a wife and ten children ,the oldest of whom is twenty years of age. That about ten years ago you memorialist obtained a grant under the great seal of this province for three hundred sixty acres of wilderness which he immediately settled, and from which his family is principally supported, that he has built upon the same a dwelling house of which he has had possession for nearly the same time which said lot still remains in its original wild state. That your memorialist having no marsh land included in his said grant has met with great difficulties in improving his farm land having no other means for his support than what is derived from his own exertions and labour. He therefore begs to state that in front of the lands granted to your memorialist there are 21 acres of marsh that are claimed by one James Rogers , who has never made any improvements by diking or otherwise ...................................petition goes on to ask for this land.

I found this on the NB archives web site:

    The petition of Thomas Herrett
           Humbly sheweth
That your petitioner is ninety-two years of age and upwards, that he served in the Revolutionary War in  America as conductor of Baggage Wagons having six men under his charge , that about 1773 was taken prisoner at Thomson's Fort in South Carolina, Captain Neil Campbell commanding the troops and baggage that he made his escape from the Americans and went to Baltimore from whence he sailed for the West Indies where he was  (?) into the Leander a forty -five gun Ship, he was then taken to England and after the termination of the Revolutionary War was discharged that he came back to America and has actually resided in Sackville in the County of Westmorland in this province for fifty years and that about the year 1837 he left this province with a part of his family and last summer returned to those he left who are not in circumstances to support him. That he is in  indignant circumstances not having any property whatsoever  to support and maintain himself  he therefore prays that your Excellency and Honors will be pleased to grant him .  such a sum as you in your wisdom may deem meet . Solely for the purpose of enabling  your petitioner to procure a pittance for his few remaining days.
And as in duty bound  pray.

    Thos Herrett

Notes and web sites for Thomas Herrett and Bridget Besto:

In the other petition  dated Oct. 11th, 1841: "I having five children and at least forty grand children and several great grandchildren residing in the province of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia".

A posting with descendants of Thomas Herrett and Bridget Besto.

Besto/Besta is not listed anywhere else that I can find,  I found a William Bearsto with a family on the 1770 Nova Scotia census at Cumberland.

Planters and Pioneers by Esther Clark Wright lists:        Bearisto, William........Halifax, Cumberland m. Mary--m. Mehitable, d. 1804. 4 girls, 1770 .  I think Besto may be a misspelling of Bearisto.
I received a reply from the Provincial Archives after inquiring about her will that " Index lists her (
Mehitable) in 1804 when she was referenced as a widow. Only an inventory of property on file. No mention of family."

William Beasto is #75 on the 1759 Cumberland Grant.
William Beairsto is on the list willing to settle in Sackville in 1761.
William Chapman, the carpenter in charge of repairs at Fort Cumberland, mentions in his summer diary of 1776 a worker called Besto.

Thanks to Diane McLeod who kindly sent her findings and research regarding the descendants of Duncan Campbell.

From the book, The Story of  Sussex and Vicinity by Grace Aiton,

"Scottish Immigration - The legislature of New Brunswick began to encourage immigration by paying the passage of prospective settlers from the Old Country.  In 1804, seven families, consisting of 40 persons were brought from Scotland at a cost of 164 pounds.........A tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation relates the trip on the "Rose Ann" was long and perilous, and at one time the fog was so dense that the yard-arm caught branches of trees along the shores of Newfoundland. Woman and children were confined to the hold, where they alternately wept and prayed until the ship came into safe harbor at Saint John................................
.Some went farther inland, such as
Duncan Campbell, who brought his six motherless children to a settlement which in later years took his name from the large number of male descendants living there."

    Notes for Duncan Campbell

Duncan Campbell married a second time 26 Nov. 1816 to Margaret McLeod( nee Morrison).  She was a widow of Donald McLeod. Their children were: Duncan, Christianna, and Eliza.
From the Kings Co Record of 15 Dec 1893 there is a memorial to Duncan Jr
" In the  old burying ground near the Upper Sussex Corner, Sussex is a monument to the memory of
Duncan Campbell, a native of Baidalbin, Parish of Aberfoyle, Perthshire Scotland, who died October 14th, 1846, at the age of 84 years, and of Margaret his wife, who died March 20th, 1840, aged 68 years.
He came to New Brunswick in the year 1803, bringing several children by his first wife---the late Finlay, Donald and John Campbell of Campbell Settlement, also Catherine who married John Bolton, and many years ago removed with him to Ontario; Ann , who married Benjamin Belding and lived in Studholm and Mary, wife of John McLeod, who lived at the Portage in Cardwell. Besides these it is said that Mr. Campbell left in Scotland one or two sons who never came to America................................".
The article goes on to outline Duncan Jr's life and family.

From Simon Baxter , the Loyalist :

What is called the "Rock" burying ground across the road from and nearer the river than Christ Church, Bloomfield, was part of the Baxter property.  His house , built of stone, every trace of which has disappeared, was a little farther down the river.  Here he was living in 1792 when one Patrick Campbell, a Scotsman, visited him.  Of this Campbell very little is known. His book--"Travels in the interior inhabited places of North America in the years 1791 and 1792" is exceedingly rare, but the Champlain Society has published a beautiful reprint with valuable notes and such sketch of the life of the author as it was possible to procure.
From a book written by Patrick Campbell regarding Simon Baxter

From the Parish of Christ Church by J.E. Hoyt ........

At Bloomfield,( Norton as it was then called) Captain Simon Baxter settled in 1782 on what became known as the Baxter-Studholm Grant containing 9,500 acres.  Captain Baxter built his home of stone near the present Rock Cemetery and with other claims, held a tract approximately a mile and a half either side of the Kennebecasis beginning at the old Toll Bridge and extending to the FingerBoard (Norton Station). His headquarters were at the lower end where he retained a large farm and gave or sold others to his sons and daughters.

Captain Simon Baxter was a remarkable man in a number of ways. He was a Loyalist but arrived and was settled before others who came to New Brunswick. He had had an exciting career during the war sharing it with one of his sons. He had held considerable property before hostilities broke out , but this was largely stripped from him because of his loyalty to the British cause. At one time his wife Prudence had nothing much on which to support the family and filed a most pathetic appeal. Simon was given leave to return to his home but was promptly  seized by his neighbours as a King's man. They cut him with swords and bayonets, put a rope around his neck and would have hanged him without further ceremony if a hangman could have been had on such short notice. Failing in this they led him by the rope behind his own horse and threw him into Keene jail, taking away his pass and parole. He escaped and there's a story that   at one time he escaped by setting fire to a beehive. While his captors were quieting their horses, he poured water down the barrels of their muskets , mounted a horse and rode off. On being hailed to halt or be fired upon, he is supposed to have replied "fire and be damned", and so escaped. Even so he endured one cold dark winter of incarceration among his enemies and carried bayonet scars until his death. His is truly a romantic tale and one which probably echoes thousands of other accounts, but Baxter was a true cavalier, fought heartily, suffered heavily and forgave magnificently, for it is said he treated his prisoners with the greatest kindness..............................................

    VERMONT AIDS ENEMY PRISONERS

    31. [JOHN HANCOCK] Most unusual Revolutionary War-date letter to Governor Hancock from CAPT. DANIEL CLAP, commander of the guards at a Continental prison stockade, regarding problems at the camp that hints of neighboring Vermont's possible disaffection during the American Revolution. Good historical content. ALS, 3pp, 8¼"x12¾", Rutland, Aug 4, 1781. Complaining of the problems he is encountering in recruiting guards, some of then leaving to rejoin the Army and in particular the clandestine assistance his prisoners are receiving from an unnamed Vermont organization undermining his efforts. Capt. Clap writes in small part: "...What renders it [guard duty] much more difficult is a secret connection and communication betwixt our prisoners and certain persons belonging to the State of Vermont, so called, who it seems have undertaken to negotiate their exchange or redemption...nine have made their escape from us and arrived safe at their place of refuge, among whom was the noted Simon Baxter (whose conduct and character I doubt not your excellency may remember while at Boston), but by the vigilance & good conduct of Genl. Bellows & others, the said Baxter was taken at Rockingham on the 30th..." Carp relates how the escaped prisoner had then produced a pass giving him safe conduct, "which reads as follows: 'Arlington, 18th of July 1781. To Whom It May Concern, the bearer Simon Baxter is permitted to remain within this state unmolested, he behaving well, until it can be known whether he can be exchanged, as he is a prisoner and offers himself for exchange. Thomas Chittenden, Capt. Grds.'..." He then states, "...as General Bellows does not yield obedience to the jurisdiction of Vermont, he immediately sent said Baxter under Guard to this place, who is this day sent off to Worcester Goal, the only secure place we have at present for prisoners who are determined to escape...Both the officers of the guard as well as myself have for a long time been both tired and ashamed for our situations, and conceiving it to be consistent with good economy & the public safety, to have the small number of prisoners at this place removed to the guard ships and the post broken up..." Darkly penned and signed. Moderate general toning; light/moderate show-through; fold separations, some repaired with archival tape; edge chipping with small paper loss. Generally in good condition. Vermont's government, unhappy with their treatment by NY, NH and other states, flirted with defection to the British, these negotiations over which actually helped stall British plans for another invasion from Quebec after Burgoyne's defeat in 1777. Est: $400-700
