An Early Will

The following will was written by Thomas Stinchcomb of Poorend in the year 1729. (1) In the name of God Amen. I Thomas Stinchcomb the Elder of Poorend within the Parish of

(2) Cromhall in the County of Gloucester Yeoman being in good health of body and of sound mind and memory

(3) do make publish and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner following...?...I give and

(4)devise unto my two daughters Elizabeth and Ann Stinchcomb their heirs and assigns for ever

(5) All that my messuage or tenement with its abuts situate and being within the Parish of Cromhall

(6) aforesaid at or near...therecalled Bibstone wherein Richard Paynter doth now inhabit together with

(7) the garden ground and orchard thereto adjoining...by my estimation half an acre be it more

(8) or less, and also outhouses edifices buildings courtyards barksides outlets hired and.. abuts

(9) whatsoever to this messauge or tenement garden ground and orchard belonging or abutting...

(10) with said messauge or tenement garden ground and ...orchard...and I lately purchased to me and my

(11) heirs of and from my son Thomas Stinchcomb together with all deeds and writings for this messauge or

(12) tenement...belong to hold unto my two daughters Elizabeth Stinchcomb and Ann Stinchcomb

13) their heirs and assigns for ever. And I do hereby will order and direct and appoint that all persons anyways possessed of

(14) or with messauge or tenement garden ground or orchard ... or any form

(15) of years or residue or any form of years any other interest in trust for my heirs and assigns

(16) or to attend the inheritance ... shall from and after my death stand possessed and interested of and in this

(17) messauge or tenement garden ground orchard and for such term of years or residue or such firm of

(18) years or other interest as aforsaid in trust for my two daughters Elizabeth Stinchcomb and Ann Stinchcomb... (19) their heirs and assigns from time to time assigned to such persons...or assigns as my two

(20) daughters Elizabeth Stinchcomb and Ann Stinchcomb their heirs or assigns shall direct of asppoint . Item

(21) I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Elizabeth Stinchcomb the sum of twentypounds and also my silver

(22) tankard and my bed and bedstead in the chamber over the buttery in the messauge or tenement wherein I

(23) now live at Poorend aforesaid with all abuts to this said bed and bedstead belonging and also my cloth...and cloth

(24) stas and my great chest this chamber over the said buttery and one of the largest dishes of pewter least

(25) wooden box and my little trunk and my best Dowlas sheet and my short ... tablecloth. Item. I give

(26) bequeath unto my said daughter Ann Stinchcomb the sum of twenty pounds and also my silver dish

(27) my silver bowl and two silver spoons and my chest of drawers and my wooden box and drawers and

(28) bedstead in the chamber over the kitchen with said messauge or tenement wherein I now live with all the

29) abuts to the last mentioned bed and bedstead belonging and also my second best Dowlas sheet and my long

(30) spring tablecloth and one of my large dishes of pewter ... and also my brewing servate

(31) with the grate and the abuts thereto belonging. Item; I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary

(32) wife of Edward Rudhall, of the Parish of Cromhall, aforesaid, carpenter, the sum of forty pounds and also my

(33) trunk, bedstead with said chamber over the buttery in the said messuage or tenement whein I

(34) now live with all the abuts to the said trunk and bed and bedstead belonging and also my little chest in the said

(35) chamber over the said buttery. Item. I give and bequeath to my daughter Joan, wife of Edward Mundy - off

(36) the Parish of Berkeley, within the said County of Gloucester, and tailor, the sum of fifty pounds and also my bed and bedstead

(37) in the chamber over the hall in the said messauge or tenement wherein I now live with all the abuts to

(38) this last mentioned bed and bedstead belonging and also my chest in the said chamber over the hall and also

(39) my Holland sheet (and my third largest dish of pewter){ the phrase within the brackets is written above the line. See note later} Item. I give and bequeath unto my said three daughters Elizabeth Stinchcomb, Joan Stinchcomb wife of

(40) the said Edward Mundy and Ann Stinchcomb all my brass household goods equally between them my said three

(41) daughters Elizabeth, Joan and Ann. Item. I give and bequeath unto my said son Thomas Stinchcomb the sum of

(42) twenty shillings and also my wearing apparel and my gun. Item. All the rest and residue of my goods

(43) cattle chattel rights credits and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever, my debts ... funeral

(44) expenses being paid and discharged I give unto my said four daughters Elizabeth Stinchcomb, Mary

(45) Wife of the said Edward Rudhall, Joan wife of the said Edward Mundy and Ann Stinchcomb equally between them my

(46) said four daughters. Item. I do make nominate and appoint my said four daughters Elizabeth Stinchcomb

(47) Mary the wife of said Edward Rudhall, Joan wife of the said Edward Mundy and Ann Stinchcomb joint executrixes of

(48) this my last will and testament revoking and making void all former wills made by me or declared in

(49) witness thereof to this my last will and testament ... in two sheets of paper, the first sheet thereof I

(50) have set my hand to the other sheet I have set my hand and seal this thirteenth day of October in the

(51) year of the reign of our sovereign George the Second by the grace of God King of Great Britain

(52) one thousand seven hundred and twenty-nine

(53) Signed sealed published and declared by the

(54) testator himself to be his last will and testament

(55) in the presence of us and also attested by us in the

(56) sight and presence of the said testator

(57) the words and my third largest dish of pewter

(58) being first interlined in the first sheet of this will
