At this month's WCPHA meeting Terry Cioni and Siggi Rohde commented on attending a demonstration downtown and seeing several people shooting with film. This does not reflect my own observations where I see most people on the street using digital cameras or cell phone cameras. What is your experience?

I did say that!

Actually I have been surprised at the number of film cameras especially medium format I have seen over the past year, maybe it is because I am looking, but there a lot of younger folks who are shooting with various film cameras rather than digital.  Maybe it is the cool factor of being different by using film, or maybe Tom A. is getting his unrelenting message of film being better out to the masses.

During this past spring and summer I carried around a Rollie TLR and was surprised by the number of people who stopped me and commented on how beautiful the cameras is.... most of the younger folks who stopped me knew exactly what a Rollie is and wanted one at some future point.

Of some interest to me is the fact that Fuji showed two absolutely stunning film 6x7 folding camera pro-types at this past PMA whether or not they indeed produce them will be another matter, but if they do I certainly want one.

I have to admit, that without a film darkroom (I am now a condo dweller) digital is just so much easier and less expensive. I love to shoot film, I love the ROLLIE TLR (this is a camera created in heaven), I certainly love the Leica M analog in many ways more so than the M digital but it is just to expensive to to slow <smile>.

The only film cameras I see nowadays are the ones that I, on occasion, carry! On the other hand, I would say that digital cameras and, even more, cellphone cameras, have brought more people into photography than ever before.

Interesting development ... or lack thereof!

My own experience is that I see very few people using any sort of camera in this weather and indoors one can get all sorts of hassle from mall security, store people, and the general public because all are afraid of the Curse of the Facebook . But I have noticed an increase in interest in film cameras on ebay with quite reasonable prices and multiple bidders.

I thought I would share this link to letsgodigital website showing the Fuji pro-types...

Fuji, certainly doesn't think film is even close to dead.

Best To All. Terry.

Maybe they meant among a crowed of professional photographers!? Definitely more people than before are taking pictures and so one will see more people with digital cameras. Film camera use  is  definitely  declining fast and has
been doing so for quite a while now, at least that has been my observation.

At the Purple Thistle Youth Art Centre where I mentor the photo group, all the young rebels take great pride in producing prints that they made by hand, in the darkroom they built, and the only camera they express fondness for, and wait their turn to use, is the Yashica TLR, kindly donated by Terry Cioni.

Yesterday the finance group that bought Polaroid out of bankruptcy in 2002 announced that they will cease manufacturing film next month but will have stockpiles sufficient for into 2009. They are willing to sell the rights to anyone willing to keep manufacturing Polaroid film but commentators doubted this would happen.

I noticed London Drugs lists a Polaroid DVD player in the current flyer

The new Polaroid moved into electronics and also seems to have sold its name for a variety of uses, including some cheap and unremarkable digital cameras.
