1. Artist selling on their own
This option may be the most time consuming, but the percentage of profit can be higher.
But if you add the expenses and time taken away for creating art time, you not ahead.
2. Having galleries sell your art
There is less work or time involved in this option, but the profit is less. Most galleries will only consider having artists that are well established, and want a contract with the artists. Most galleries receive thousands of art submissions per year and may only choose one or two artists per year. This is a hard market to break into.
3. Using an art agent or dealer
They will do all the research looking for right galleries for the artists. They also may have a relationship with certain galleries, which open more doors for the artist's work. It is to the best interest of the agent to find the right locations for marketing the art to get the most money for the artwork.
Artists have said that their agent has increased value of their work so much that they are making more money than any other way of selling. In a matter of only 6 weeks being an agent for my wife Riley Charters, I was able to get her art into four well-established galleries, and several art stores throughout British Columbia and Alberta. The value of her art has now increased several times. Now I am an agent for other artists.
