VEURNE (Furnes)

60 x 61" oil on canvas CODE #98012

On the last Sunday of July, the procession of the penitents takes place. Groups depict scenes from the Old and New Testament. Penitents, barefoot, and wearing monks' habits (a face covering hoods), carry 60-pound crosses or help carry heavy old statues.

VEURNE (Furnes) The Anunciation

60 x 61" oil on canvas CODE #9901

Scene from procession of penitents. The St. Walburga Church, 14th century, was never completed, and was sold under the French occupation (1798) for demolition. Citizenry bought and thus saved it. At war's end (1945), the spire was hit by lightning and was saved again by bucket brigades of English and Canadian soldiers.

VEURNE (Furnes) PENITENTS

60 x 61" oil on canvas CODE #9902

Courthouse with belfry tower. The St. Nicolas Church is actually on the opposite side of the market square. Once the procession has come to the end, the "Kermesse" can start and the revelry begins.

VEURNE (Furnes) ADORATION

60 x 60" oil on canvas CODE #9904

The procession of the penitents. This scene represents adoration by the shepherds, the approach by the wise men, and the flight to Egypt. Some of the buildings in the background were heavily damaged in the war.

VEURNE (Furnes) THE PARK

60 x 60' oil on canvas CODE #9903

The procession of the penitents is finished and participants return to the church to take off their habits. Young people gather in the park to find partners to celebrate at the fair.

TROY (THE SEQUEL)

37 x 23" oil on canvas CODE #9906

We are familiar with the story of how Troy was conquered with the ruse of a wooden horse. The ponies - not the big dogs they were thought to be by the natives, facilitated the conquest of two continents.

A HORSE, A CELEBRATION

48 x 32' oil on canvas CODE #99010

It is rumored that this horse can still be seen on foggy days. A percheron stallion who resisted being captured by the occupiers used to approach children, but took off soon as grown-ups came close. This horse was near magical and deserves to be celebrated as a symbol of freedom.

BOBBING

50 x 29" oil on canvas CODE #99011

A harmless (to the fish) contest at the fair, counting how many times a fish pushes up a float (no hooks).
