  When Charlemain (800AD) was consolidating his empire, it was to take the children of local rulers as assurance of their loyalty. One episode is where three children of a local king escaped the henchmen of Charlemain atop a magical horse. Especially in Southern Belgium, this event is still commemorated in ballads and colourful parades.
