Owl Steals Baby

handpull litho print

by Riley Charters 1988AD

(excerpt from a Shuswap Tale)

A mother is having trouble soothing her crying baby. After some time & no success she tells the baby,"If you don't stop crying,I will put you outside and let the Old Grey Owl get you!" So the mother puts the baby outside the doorway. Soon the sound of wings fluttering is heard outside by the mother & her parents. They rushed over only to see the Great Owl carrying off the baby Later it is discovered that the Old Owl is the baby's paternal grandmother.

The Weaving design( upper left corner) symbolizes defiance & wisdom, both of which this Great Old Owl grandmother is doing yet she should know better.
