Sasquatch Story

This happened when I was about 3 or 4 years old. We lived on Gladwin Road at the time in a big old Victorian

style house. It had high narrow windows.. and always was in need of painting somewhere. It was at the top

of Gladwin Road up from Downes Road and before the hydro electric towers. The area back then was mostly

farms. Our own place was a raspberry, strawberry farm with a hayfield and one part of the farm was just

for the chickens and cows to roam.

We had a chicken coop and a long barn for the cows and hay storage. The barn had a couple of high small windows

and two doorways both were half doors. The top half open for most of the year during the day.

From our kitchen window you could see the barnyard with the buildings.

I was home with my younger brother Eddie and maybe a younger sister more than likely just a baby at this time.

It was part of our daily routine to go for an afternoon nap. All of us sleeping including our Mom.

The rest of my brothers and sisters were away at school. Sometimes if Eddie and I woke up early we would quietly play at

the little kitchen table that sat near one of the windows.

We would stand on the chairs there and could see out the window towards the barn and coop.

As we played standing on the chairs we would periodically stop and browse out the windows.

We did this all the time.. it was part of our own routine.. quietly waiting for Mom to wake up.

This one time we got up early and were playing there and looking up from our table and look out the window.

There it was. Walking along the coop fence then to the barn. It stopped and bent down a touch to look into the first

half door of the barn. Then it continued on, stopped and looked into the second doorway.

All this time my brother and I have stopped playing altogether and are watching it.

It is tall and has black longish hair covering its entire body. It stood upright and fairly straight and tall.

Its not very muscular like a young teen in that respect. It seemed as if time and noise had all stopped.

It was so quiet, nothing was moving outside. The chickens had gone inside the coop the cows disappeared

somewhere. I don't recall even hearing a bird chirp.I can see the heat rising from the ground in small waves.

I think even my brother and I are holding our breathe. It has walked the length of the barn and is now continuing on

across a small grassy field. As it crosses the field it turns its head and is looking at the house.

It has seen us and has made eye contact. We are frozen. I am wondering about the doors.. are they locked.

It crosses the field with long strides and steps over the fence easily, crosses the road and disappears into the woods

on the other side.

After that my mind is a blank. I never told anyone what we saw that day until years later when I was maybe 35 years

old that the memory came rising to the surface. I asked my brother if he remembers that day and what was seen

but he said that no.. he is sorry but he does not remember that memory at all.

I have told this story to a few Native folks and it seems that its a good thing to see one. Seeing one is a good omen

and it means you are like a chosen one. Chosen for what..? no answer,.. probably something I have to figure out

(a gift?). Yet why so young I asked another Native person.. One popped up with an answer right away.

"Innocense of the child.. is why you saw one"

Whatever it is. The memory sends chills down my spine as I see the eyes watching us as it strode across the field.
