UNBC's broad mission is to be a "University in the north, for the north." This strong focus on northern issues is underpinned by the University's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the people and communities of the north. A number of UNBC's research institutes accordingly focus on the social, political, and economic concerns of northern BC and related regions including:
