Lakeland FASD Summer Camp With our last camp finished we have had much fun and excitement. The 4 camps that the Lakeland Centre for FASD ran this summer were for 8-10 girls, 8-10 boys, 11-13 girls & 11-13 boys and have all been full. This specially designed camp has offered kids structure, routine, consistency, fun and many experiences. Some of the activities the kids took part in were swimming, canoeing, painting horses, visiting a farm, touring the fish hatchery, and more. The highlight for the 8-10 boys was watching the fighter jet’s air show routine and meeting a real pilot. As this was the first year for the camp the Lakeland Centre for FASD has learned many valuable lessons to apply to future camps. We hope that all the kids have taken away cherished memories and that their parents have had a great break. Thanks to Joelle, Mikey & Karen our fantastic camp leaders.
The Lakeland FASD Society hosts it 3rd Annual Fundraising Auction Dinner On February 1 & 2nd the Lakeland Centre for FASD held their 3rd Annual Fundraiser in Cold Lake and Bonnyville. The two evenings were packed with auction items, local talent of comedy and music, and lots of laughs from International Comedian Michael Yager. The two sold out shows raised just under $40, 000.00. All of these funds are being used to operate a specialized camp for children with FASD, as Children with FASD often experience difficulty understanding new situations and following rules, so regular summer camps can be frustrating for all and they are asked to leave fairly soon. We have raised enough funds to run the camp of 4 one week sessions the summer of 2006. We hope that we can take a leadership role in developing the summer camp for kids with FASD. Both events would not have been possible without our exceptional organizing committee. We would like to thank: Heather Rymut, Sue Lysachok, Geri Thibeault, Tanya Giles, Tracey Robertson, Sharon Winik, Tracey Knowlton, Denise Kowalski, Bob Mattice and Charlene McKay. We couldn’t have done it without all of the volunteer help that we had. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Corporate Sponsors who helped make this event possible: Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., Renigade Trucking, Kudu Industries, Ducharme Motors, Layton Bros., Holly Mielke, V-Realty, Ken McMillan Welding, Wetlander, Imperial Oil Resources, Weatherford BMW, Denmar Energy, Max Oilfield, Encana, Devon, Urlacher Construction, Red Fox Developments, Value Drug Mart, Community living for the Little Divide, Drywall Services, Doherty Insurance, Tri Town Telecom, Farrell Family, Lakeside Motors, CBL Oxford Insurance, City of Cold Lake, Cold Lake RCMP, Quinn Contracting, TD Bank, and ATCO Gas. We hope to see you next year. Photos: For Information on Comedian Michael Yager - Click Here Comedian Rich Vos - Click Here Comedian Ian Bagg - Click Here Comedian Bonnie McFarlane - Click Here
New research network to help children and youth affected by FASD Cold Lake...Ms. Audrey McFarlane, Executive Director for the nationally recognized Lakeland Centre for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder joins leading researchers and experts in FASD. Northwestern provinces and territories have joined forces to create a research network that brings together leading experts on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). The creation of the research network comes as part of the Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Partnership's commitment to promote research of FASD and to disseminate and share findings with stakeholders. Fifteen experts from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C., the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut make up the board that will oversee the research network's strategic direction. Alberta representative Ms. Lou Winthers was elected by the board to serve as chair. "FASD is an incredibly complex issue that affects the lives of thousands of families," said Linda Reid, B.C. minister of state for early childhood development. "By sharing our resources and ensuring more dollars are directed west and to the north we can achieve new milestones more quickly. That, in turn, means better lives and better futures for children and youth affected by this disorder and greater inroads into its prevention." Under the guidance of FASD experts Dr. Sterling Clarren, CEO/scientific director and Dr. Margaret Clarke, associate director, the research network will advance research projects and build relationships across and within its jurisdictions. The intention is to compile evidence-based information that will guide progressive, inclusive policy, ultimately bettering the lives of individuals and families affected by the disorder. "Research and the creation of the Canada Northwest Research Network has been a real focus of the partnership," said Heather Forsyth, Alberta's Minister of Children's Services and the next chair of the partnership. "This board is comprised of some of the best and brightest minds in FASD research and planning, and is poised to lead the way." The Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Partnership is an alliance of seven jurisdictions that work towards the development and promotion of an interprovincial/territorial approach to prevention, intervention, care and support of individuals affected by FASD. The partnership has been in place since 1998. FASD is a medical condition that refers to a range of disorders, including brain injury, caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. It affects approximately nine of every 1,000 children born in Canada each year.
