FOR SALE

From time to time I have found that I have various items that are surplus to my needs. When I find that I no longer require these items and neither does anyone else in the hangar, I will post them here and make them generally available. Sometimes I also come across excellent bargains that I will make available to other Safari builders first. These items are all in new condition unless otherwise stated.

As a builder, I am very conscious of the costs involved with shipping various items and will only charge a maximum of the actual cost; for physically small items I'll consider including it in the base price. These items will be shipped from Canada and it is the buyer's responsibility to pay any duties and import fees to another country. Since many of these items are of US origin, they should be able to be imported into the USA without any duties.

Unfortunately for Canadian purchasers, I have to charge the 5% GST on most items. For small purchases we can arrive at a round number for this :-)

Anyone interested in purchasing these items should send me an email via - Please make sure it has "Safari" within the subject line or it may go to the spam bucket.

GOVERNOR INTERFACE - $125 US (including shipping)

One of the potential problems with adapting the R22 governor is to obtain a proper tach signal. Various sources of the signal are available, but they dependant upon the type of ignition and/or magnetos used. This device allows a common vent hole sensor (Westach 720-14R or UMA T1A9-1) for a standard magneto to be interfaced. It essentially doubles the number of pulses from the sensor to the rate that is required by the governor controller. Since the box already needed to be added into the harness, I also installed the indicator lamp relay in it to simplify the physical mounting. Note that the plug is a standard D-Sub-9 and the box without mounting ears is about 2" square.

Just to make sure there is absolutely no confusion: This interface is to double the frequency of a vent hole sensor due to the fact that the mags rotate at 1/2 engine speed. HOWEVER, the governor controller still needs to be recalibrated due to the different speeds of the R22 and Safari engines.

RHC COLLECTIVE FRICTION ASSEMBLY - $50 (including shipping)

I have a spare collective friction assembly from an R22. This might be adaptable to a Safari (yes, I'm trying) or the arm can be used on something like the carb heat selector or the cabin heat selector.

PILLOW BLOCK SHIMS - $Free$

I received a batch of shims of various thicknesses ( .015" to .075") from another builder who made up a large batch of them. I still have a lot of them (probably enough for two+ ships) as I chose to make some thicker ones and also use some different thickness during the final fitting. While a builder may choose different thicknesses or material, these are a real quick way of doing the initial testing to determine the total thickness of material required. Individual shims are real time consuming to make when dozens may be required ... even more so if the initial "guess" is wrong.

Since these were provided to me at no cost (including no shipping), I'll pass the same offer along to another builder ... preferably one who will be mounting the tail rotor driveshaft within the near future. In turn, I'll ask that they do the same with any leftover shims once they are finished with that task.

TACHOMETER - $500 US

I've made enough negative comments on this website about the various tachs supplied with the kit that it's only appropriate that I offer an alternative. While I'm also testing a couple of different tachs, I'm pretty sure that this is the unit that I'll end up using long term. These are high quality robust units that many of us have had the opportunity to fly behind. I can honestly say that I've never had any problems using them either from an electro-mechanical or from an ergonomic standpoint ... I find them very easy to read. From the latest price list I've seen, the new list price is $2,751 and the overhauled price is $710 plus a core charge of $850 ... they're not cheap units.

In order to use these units in the Safari, I am trying to only recalibrate them electronically and without any physical modification (i.e. should not effect their value as a core). So far, this has been successful. Unless otherwise requested, these are being set up so that top-of-the-green (104%) is 500 RRPM. I'm also more than willing to adjust each unit for the unique parallax that occurs as the result of each builder's panel angle and seating position. There is very little parallax on the rotor side, but there can be a bit on the engine side as it's needle is further away from the scale. I am not altering the faceplate in any way, but the owner could choose to re-paint them (such as the lower yellow band) if they so choose.

I'm also including the mating connector so that there is no need to modify the attached connector when wiring it into the Safari. As to sensors ... the ones provided with various CHR tachs are not appropriate and new sensors along with 3-conductor wiring will be required. For the rotor side, the UMA Instruments 1A3-2 sensor or Westach's 303DH2T hall effect sensors should work fine and on the engine side it appears that that the UMA Instruments 1A3-4 sensor is the appropriate one. If the engine has an S4LSC-204T magneto (i.e. O-360-J2A) then there is no need for a unique engine sensor. It's probably just as easy for the purchaser to acquire their own sensors but I can also obtain them at an extra cost.

Units that I initially had available ... note that all have the wide green band

TYPE J SHIELDED THERMOCOUPLE EXTENSION WIRE - $25

Twenty feet of Type J shielded thermocouple extension wire ( EXFF-J-20S-TWSH from Omega ) ... list price is $46 for 25 feet. Depending on the instrument pod configuration, this might be enough wire to run all four of the extension wires for the CHT gauge. On the rear side, it should be possible to put the connections on the cabin side of the firewall which then takes about 4' on each wire to reach the base of the instrument pod. B-crimp connectors for use with Westach probes are also available. Note that this wire is to be used with powered gauges and not on the Westch CHT gauge supplied with the Safari Instrument Kit.

SAFARI TRAILER - $2,750 US

This is being listed for another builder: He has a CHR Heliport Trailer located in the NE States that he no longer needs and is willing to take $2,750 for it ... current CHR list price on their website is $4,495. These trailers are properly sprung for the Safari and the craft can be trailered with the blades installed ... basically ready to fly off/on once the hold-downs are removed. I have one and can attest that they are very smooth and track extremely well. If someone is serious about this, I will put the two of you in contact with each other.

Picture from CHR's website of a similar trailer

CHR's FULL LOTUS FLOATS for the SAFARI - Reasonable Offers Considered

This is being listed for another builder: He has a set of new CHR floats that he would like to sell ... all hardware, gear leg extensions, skid tubes and extra flotation bags included. Unlike new floats from CHR, these have been fitted, rigged and are ready to install. Purchase price was $6,995 but the owner is willing to listen to reasonable offers.

The same floats on a factory Safari

N.B. I'm not asking / receiving any kind of commission for the above two items. I'm simply doing this as a favour and will put the seller and a potential purchaser in contact with each other ... I will not be involved in any final negotiations or monetary transfers.

T-BOLT FUEL TANK STRAPS - $150 for a set of four

I chose not to use the CHR-supplied fuel tank straps and ordered some Clampco C510-N-100-1425-S2 straps. In order to nullify the setup charge, I actually got extras and will pass them along to another builder at my cost. More information is available here.

1/2 AMP BREAKER - $20 US Each

I have a couple of these available and they are normally either very hard to find or much more expensive than the 1+ amp variety. These are similar to the normal Klixon 7277 breakers available from the standard suppliers, but they are higher quality (Mil-Spec vs. Commercial), they're SLIGHTLY longer, use a slightly larger mounting hole (15/32" vs. 7/16") and the tang angle is reversed compared to the -1's. Full specs are here. These were actually obtained as Bell 206 spares.

PUSHBUTTON - $8 US Each

I obtained some of these high quality pushbuttons and I think they would make a good replacement for the starter pushbutton for those that are customizing the end of their collectives. They're actually DPST momentary pushbuttons that could be paralleled for redundancy although each circuit should have more than enough capacity. Specifications on the MS25089-3C switch can be found here.

COPPER SCREEN

I obtained some fairly heavy copper screen to act as a finger guard for my avionics cooling fan and also to act as a bit of an EMI/RFI shield since I chose to add a ground wire to it. I have some excess of this material and if a Safari builder is interested in some of it, they can send me an email. Price is simple ... return a similar favour to another builder.

CONTACTOR CATCH DIODES

I always have a few of these available. They're quite cheap (about a quarter each), but I know one builder who had to pay a LOT for them at a local TV shop. If a builder wants a couple of these, they can contact me and I'll place them in an envelope and mail them. The price ... well how about the first round at the pub when we meet. Even better, is to convince CHR to install them on their solenoid board.

TRANSIENT VOLTAGE PROTECTORS

I have some 16 and 18 volt 1500 watt transient voltage suppressors which can be used to protect various electronic devices from voltage spikes. These are quite small and easy to install. For the price (less than a beer), I'll send one or two to any Safari builders that want/need them.

NON-VENTED FUEL CAP

I got a non-vented fuel cap from Aircraft Spruce so that I could pressure test my fuel tanks ... yes there were pinholes in the supplied welds that needed to be re-welded. Since I no longer need this, I'll pass it along to the next builder who wants to do a pressure test. No cost, but the person who receives this cap has to agree to pass it along to another Safari builder. Let's all make our ships safer!!!
