Weekend Rock Climbing Courses
'Basic Rock'
Course Details
Rock climbing is a great sport, it's physically demanding, mentally challenging and quite addictive! Once you're on the rock all
other concerns drift away as you concentrate on the climb ... putting together a sequence of movements that will see you
surmounting the apparently impossible. It feels pretty good heading home, tired yet energized you're already planning your next
day out.
This weekend course is designed to get you started. It's held outdoors because that's where the real action is, at outrageously
spectacular places such as Yamnuska or Lake Louise.
You'll enjoy a great time and experience a safe introduction to the sport. Rock climbing is all about moving well, using balance
and technique to climb, saving your strength for when it's really needed. The aim of this course is to help you learn movement
skills which you can further develop through practice, allowing you to quickly progress to more challenging climbs. We also
teach you basic 'top-rope' belay techniques to allow you to get out and practice in safety.
In addition to taking this basic program check out the 'Plus Days' add-on option and you'll be just blown away by what you can
accomplish on this weekend!

choose a suitable 'multi-pitch' (several rope lengths in height) route and spend the whole day climbing it. Climbs
include routes on Yamnuska, Kid Goat Buttress, Tunnel Mountain and Cascade.

Instructors and Group Size
Enthusiastic and extremely talented, your instructors hold climbing certification from the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. Your
safety and enjoyment are paramount to them. There will be a maximum of 12 students. Instructor/student ratios range down from 1:6. On multi-pitch days 1:2 is the norm.
How difficult is it? How fit and experienced need you be?
You need NO previous experience This course is for beginners. A high level of fitness will contribute to enjoyment and achievement.
Transportation
We normally rely upon participants car pooling. Should this not be feasible we will ensure that something is organized. If visiting the area
from far afield we would recommend you rent a car so as to be able to visit local attractions and the like in the evenings (you may be able
to share this expense with other participants). Canmore is a 1 hour drive west from Calgary. There are frequent buses from the airport and
downtown, we will send details upon booking.
Accommodation and Meals
These are your responsibility. There are lots of options available including campgrounds, hostels, B'n'Bs,
motels and hotels! We will send you a list of recommendations once you book. On the course you will need
a packed lunch and something to drink.
Equipment and Clothing
The course fee includes use of rock shoes and all technical gear although you should feel free to bring any
gear you already have. When you book we will send you a complete list of anything you will need to bring
(appropriate clothing etc.).
Insurance
There is no charge for rescue. If we climb in Banff National Park you will need a day entry pass (c.$5) to qualify for free rescue. This
pass can be obtained when we enter the Park. It is wise, though to ensure that your health plan will cover you in case of illness or accident
whilst here. Obtain extra coverage if necessary.
