Skills For Mountain Leaders
Summer
Course Details
The objective of this 18-day program is to teach risk-management to mountain leaders and to develop their
core judgmental skills. We achieve this objective via a program that combines intensive group experience with work in challenging
mountain activities. It is ideal for those with some experience of mountaineering and backpacking now moving towards the assumption of
leadership roles. It is also particularly relevant to those considering entering the training program of the Association of Canadian Mountain
Guides.
You will be taught skills which you can put to personal use and a heightened awareness of the skills of leadership needed to ensure the
success of mountain ventures. All participants will be provided with a written evaluation of their course performance which will highlight
areas of strength and identify areas where further development may be needed. This will be particularly valid for those considering ACMG
and other advanced leadership training. A course certificate will also be issued.

Course Agenda
Day 1: COURSE START ... ORIENTATION
Meet 9:00am at the Alpine Club of Canada Clubhouse in Canmore. During the day we get to know each other, review the course
agenda and objectives before checking gear and getting into the basics of trip preparation for the following trip. Evening session on client
care and environmental guidelines for wilderness travel.
Day 2 - 4: HIKING AND MOUNTAIN TRAVEL SKILLS
During this three-day back country trip we concentrate on group pacing, map reading and compass skills, environmental ethics,
campsite selection and management, basic shelter building, blister care (very important!) and basic emergency response, environmental
hazards, stove use and back country cooking skills.
Day 5 - 9: ROCK CLIMBING AND ROCK RESCUE
We start on the basics of rock climbing and on simple top-roping skills for the first two days. Rope-work, knots, belays,
movement on rock, rappelling and anchor building are the focus. Then we spend the next three days using these skills in more advanced
situations as well as looking at some basic rescue techniques. (We work from a base camp)
Day 10: PREPARATION DAY
In the morning we prepare food and equipment for the next section. The afternoon and evening are free.
Day 11 - 13: SNOW AND ICE SCHOOL
From a camp at the Columbia Icefields you will be introduced to glacier travel and to moving on steeper snow and ice
terrain. On the last day we attempt one of the large peaks of the area such as Mount Athabasca.
Day 14 - 18: EXTENDED GLACIER EXPEDITION
The culminating trip where we put our skills to use. We will look at leadership styles and methods and will help refine your
mountain leadership skills.
Instructors and Group Size
Are trained and certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. They are also licensed by Parks Canada.
How difficult is it? How fit and experienced need you be?
Participants must have previous experience in at least one of the course subjects (overnight hiking, rock climbing or mountaineering).
Participants must also be in good physical condition. The course involves some long days and heavy packs. Packs on the last trip could
weight fifty pounds or more.
Transportation
We normally rely upon participants car pooling. Should this not be feasible we will ensure that something is organized. If visiting the area
from far afield we would recommend you rent a car so as to be able to visit local attractions and the like in the evenings (you may be able
to share this expense with other participants). Canmore is a 1 hour drive west from Calgary. There are frequent buses from the airport and
downtown, we will send details upon booking.
Accommodation and Meals
Accommodation in Canmore will be in a comfortable bunkroom-style lodge with communal facilities. The rest of the time we will be
camping. It will be possible to store excess baggage in Canmore for the course duration. All meals from lunch
on day 1 to lunch on day 18 are included.
Equipment and Clothing
We supply specialized climbing gear and group gear but you will have to bring your own clothing, sleeping bag and backpack.
Insurance
Please ensure that you are covered for the cost of evacuation or rescue should you fall ill or be injured. Most health benefit plans (public
and private) and some travel insurance policies do cover this. Otherwise, in the unlikely event that you need these services you may be
liable for the cost (not astronomical). We can give you further information if necessary.
Booking Information
Please book as early as practical to avoid disappointment. We require a $1107CDN deposit with the balance due 8 weeks in advance,
after that, full payment is required. To avoid unnecessary cancellation penalties we suggest you take our cancellation insurance for an
extra, non-refundable $166, this must accompany your deposit.

Along with all relevant receipts we will send you a full trip logistical kit (containing meeting times, a list of what to bring and info on how to
