Awakening you become conscious of a faint light filtering into the
tent. Poking your nose out the door you see that the stars a starting to fade as a daub of
light picks out the eastern horizon. You pull on warm clothes and boots and emerge to find
the surrounding peaks lit by dawn's pink and apricot hues. Far below, the valley remains
wrapped deep in shadow. You're camped high on a glacier, your memories of regular city
life left behind for now and all you have to concentrate on now is cooking breakfast and
climbing a beautiful snow-clad peak. This is wilderness mountaineering!
Venture with us to the hidden icefields and peaks of the Canadian West! Climb remote
peaks, camp on isolated snowfields and immerse yourself in a fantastic wilderness
experience.
Designed for people who have taken our 'Intro to Mountaineering' course or equivalent,
this expedition offers the opportunity to experience wilderness mountaineering, to learn
alpine expedition skills and put into practice general mountaineering techniques recently
learnt.

Location
The objective is to visit more remote areas where the 'wilderness' experience will be as
important as the 'mountaineering' experience. Several areas in the Rockies and in the
Interior Ranges of BC exist where a combination of 'setting' and good intermediate
climbing add up to a fantastic mountain experience. Locations will vary and be chosen with
current conditions in mind.
Climbing objectives will be glaciated peaks with potential for participants to lead. We
want to give participants the opportunity to consolidate and revise the skills learnt on
the 'Intro' course and, further, to experience and learn about high-altitude camping and
travel in remote wilderness areas.
Course Agenda
Day 1: Meet at the Yamnuska office at 8:00am. Introductions,
expedition briefing then expedition packing and preparation. Leave for trailhead when
ready then hike as far as feasible before camping.
Day 2: Complete the ascent to, and set up a high camp.
Day 3 - 6: Daily climbs with opportunity to review and practice
general mountaineering techniques.
Day 7: Hike out aiming to be back in Canmore by 6pm in time to
head out or maybe to go out on the town to celebrate seven days of wilderness life!

Instructors
and Group Size
The maximum number of participants will be 8.
Maximum instructor ratio is 1:4. Instructors are trained and certified by the Association
of Canadian Mountain Guides. They are also licensed by Parks Canada.
How
difficult is it? How fit and experienced need you be?
This is one of our most demanding programs. Participants must be
ready to shoulder heavy packs for the first days of the trip (60lbs plus!) and carry them
over rough and demanding terrain. That they be in good physical shape is essential. Participants must have prior general mountaineering training at least
to the level of our 'Intro to Mountaineering' course.

Transportation
There are regular bus services to the Banff-Canmore area and when you book we will send
you the bus schedules. During the course, we rely on participants pooling transport
together. When booking, it is important to let us know if you will be bringing your own
vehicle so that we can assist in coordinating transport. Should there be a problem with
this we will arrange alternatives.
Accommodation and Meals
In the mountains we use modern 2 and 3-person expedition tents. Food is supplied from
lunch on Day 1 to lunch on Day 7. If you have any special dietary requirements please tell us when booking.
Accommodation in Canmore is not included but we can arrange for you to stay at local B
& B's or the Alpine Club Clubhouse before and after the expedition. It will be
possible to store excess baggage in Canmore for the course duration.
