Quality

For some time there has been a need for a wilderness first-aid provider in the Bow Valley that can offer easy pre-course information and booking facilities combined with excellent, relevant and consistent course delivery. In an effort to meet this need Yamnuska Inc. has decided to link up with Wilderness Medical Associates, Canada (WMA). This Fall WMA will be providing Wilderness First Responder (72hr) courses for the public and Advanced Wilderness First Aid (36hr) courses. WMA is the leading wilderness first aid provider in North America and has an excellent reputation.

Cost

$685 Canadian includes GST, instruction, textbook and course materials.

Prerequisites

Whilst helpful, no prior first-aid certification is needed for this course. Minimum age is 16 years.

Instructors

The course is being taught by professional instructors from Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA). They receive intensive vetting and training. Course quality is continually monitored and assessed by WMA.

Certification

WMA certification is recognized throughout Canada and the US. Successful students will receive a certification card from WMA, which is valid for 3 years. Within 3 years, graduates may recertify by way of a two-day course.

Grades

Grades are based on attendance (100% required), and performance on both written and practical final exams. Not everyone passes this course.

Class Format

72 hours, over 8 days. Mornings are devoted to lectures and exams. Afternoons are devoted to practical hands-on sessions and video taped simulations*. Evenings are reserved for study and assignments.

* Expect two or three emergency rescue simulations with made-up victims and stage blood that will be video-taped for enhanced learning.

Content

Topics include patient assessment, body systems, equipment improvisation, trauma, environmental medicine, toxins, backcountry medicine, and wilderness rescue.

Bring

Appropriate clothing for the location and time of year. Remember that, rain or shine, much of our time is spent outside. You will also need a sleeping bag, pens, and a notebook.

Location

Canmore is 100km west of Calgary on the Trans Canada (#1) Highway. Calgary International Airport is regularly serviced by flights from Europe and throughout North America. Participants are responsible for their own transport to Canmore which can be reached by regular bus service (on booking we'll send you full bus info). Transportation during the course is not included. We will coordinate a car pool among participants, if necessary we can arrange additional transportation.

Meals and Accommodation

These are your responsibility. There are lots of options available ranging from the inexpensive Alpine Club of Canada Clubhouse right on up to five star hotels. We'll send you a list of recommended lodgings and are happy to make bookings for you. Each day on the course you will need to bring a packed lunch and something to drink.

Booking Information

Please book as early as practical to avoid disappointment. We require a $225CDN deposit with the balance due 8 weeks in advance, after that, full payment is required. To avoid unnecessary cancellation penalties we suggest you take our cancellation insurance for an extra non-refundable $34, this must accompany your deposit.
